Okay, so I wrote my Common App essay about a specific experience I had in debate: namely, becoming league champion in public forum debate. However, I have yet to do my 150-word extracurricular essay, and really, debate is one of the most important things in my life, not just extracurricular-wise, but actually in terms of life. Do you think it would be overkill to write more about it? Or is it worth it to provide more details?

Edit: Sorry if this should be in the college essays forum. Whoops.

I think if you can provide new fresh details in the 150 word EC essay, you should go ahead and do it. However, there is obviously no point of repeating what you have covered in the Common App essay.

nah, I see nothing wrong with putting debate in both essays. As long as the actual essay reveals stuff about you through debating, while the EC one reveals stuff about your skill or passion for debating.

As long as you talk about different aspects. Otherwise, definitely overkill. There's touching on it as something that's important to you in an essay about other things + your longer supplement. But, seriously, it sounds like you need something else to write about.

Well... I have Academic Decathlon, but really it's not nearly as important to me. I have some others, but again, not as important. Do you think it would really work against me? Or make me seem boring/one-note?

My essay is kind of about taking chances and reaching your full potential, overcoming fears, etc. while I think the 150 word one would be more about becoming a leader and the hard work I put in. Too much overlap?

All else equal, I'd favor writing on something else. It sounds, though, like you may not be able to write a short essay that suits you on a different topic. Given that, your plan to speak of different aspects of debate sounds reasonable to me.
