Bed bugs at NYU dorms?

I've heard horror stories about bed bugs at NYU dorms, and in NYC in general.

I'm a west coast person who is completely terrified at the idea of little bugs eating away at me in my sleep!

Does anyone have any personal experience with this?

Having lived in dorms, I’ve never had nor heard of anyone that has had bed bugs in the NYU dorms.

Yea same. No pest problems here either. Dorms are very clean… IF YOU CLEAN YOUR DORM REGULARLY.

Have never heard this.

Has anyone run into cockroaches in the NYC dorms? Or the bathrooms?

Never heard of bed bugs in 4 years either, it’s a myth. As for other pests, I sometimes left pizza in a box next to my comp for a couple of days (I’d order a pie) and never got pests. I can count the number of cockroaches I’ve seen in 4 years on one hand.

My advice would be for any kid moving into dorm anywhere would be to bring bed bug spray, thoroughly spray mattress, then put mattress cover which prevents bed bugs (not entirely cloth, read labels) on mattress. ANYWHERE. This is not an NYU problem. If you do not likel feel of the anti-bed bug mattress covers, get another one to go on top.

Never seen any pests here despite leaving food out more than I should. However, I had one friend (one) who had a cockroach problem in a dorm but it was unique to his room for some reason and no neighbors had problems. He’s a pretty clean guy and for all I know made the whole story up…

I hate to break this pattern of “I’ve never heard of this problem,” but we had bed bugs in our dorm this semester.

Thankfully, it wasn’t an infestation. My biggest issue was how the situation was handled. Yes, an inspector came to confirm that it was a bedbug and our room was fumigated within 24 hours. No, we were not given a place to stay or told to do with ALL of the stuff we had to move out of the room.
We spent a total of about $1000 in dry cleaning and were only reimbursed $50 each.
Our neighbors were not contacted about our bed bugs, and I hear about the bugs being an issue in other rooms in our dorm. Also cockroaches.

My advice? There’s nothing you can do to prevent it. Even if you’re super clean, your roommates might not be as careful and there’s always a chance that someone on your floor will have them. You can pick up bed bugs anywhere.

What can you do?
Don’t bring in stuff from the street (a lot of students do this, especially if they’re new to the city)
Get pillow covers
Pray you don’t get them

Also, don’t leave your belongings laying around on the ground on the sidewalks, lobbies, and even elevators.

The thing is, bugs are common at all
colleges so it’s not like it’s unique to
NYU.

Damn Keachoy sounds like u’ve been through a lot of S**t lol… So i guess there are people with bug problems. Personally everyone i know ( live in weinstein, hayden, founders, brittany, 3rd north) doesn’t have that problem. So i guess you just have to pray that you don’t end up in Keachoy’s situation (srry :stuck_out_tongue: ). But occasionally we do get a couple turtles in our toilets and coming out of our showers.
