Being familiar with New York city and the dorms of various colleges there, I have the feeling that the dorms at columbia or NYU will not be much different than 70% of all residences in New York City. NYC (although I absolutely love the city) is famous for it's mice, rats and roaches which are hard to control especially in the summer heat. Newer buildings do not have this issue but I assume that college dorms are not new nor upscale pads and therefore will be prone to have these little critters.
I do not mean to gross anyone out or to offend anyone (I love NYC and my parents and many friends have lived there and many still do so).
The purpose of this thread is for me to find out how common this problem really is. Anyone who has friends at NYU or Columbia or who has seen the "real" dorms there, your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

During my sophomore year, I lived with a mouse for the last 3 weeks of the school year. That was not very pleasant.

Otherwise, the rodent problem is pretty nonexistent.

My bro and his GF go to NYU and Barnard respectively and both lived in the dorms, I've heard no real chronic complaints of rodents/insects for as long as he's been there. Really, I wouldn't worry about it. However there will be rodents in every major city, its not like they are "non-existent"

You have not seen roaches unless you've been to Alabama (or Madagascar). The ones we have here are HUGE and THEY FLY.

First of all thanks for the replies. Right now I live in Florida and even though we live in a new house,I am always scared that we will get infested by critters because of the heat and moisture. I know of many people who have insect or roach problems (yuck). I have to say that I am particularly sensitive when it comes to that and anything regarding cleanseliness. My parents keep joking that I will get the sloppiest roomate(s) when I go to college in 2008, because I am such a neat freak. Does anyone know if you can put on the request form that you want someone who likes to be neat?
I have heard about those HUGE and FLYING roaches and right now I am shaking just thinking about it.
Living with a mouse does not sound very appealing either. My cousins live in Berlin, Germany and they just found out that they have mice between their walls. All the buildings are really old there but beautiful. I guess that is the price they pay for living in a historic building. One of my cousins has however made arrangements to move already which I think is kind of funny, a grown man being afraid of a couple of mice...
Oh well, thanks again for all your time.

I don't find mice to be intrusive unless they're diseased or bite me. One of my friends had a mouse living in his apt for a few weeks, and they had to kill it because his girlfriend put out sticky traps without him knowing. It was really cute though, and teeny tiny. And another of my friends has a pet white rat named Bianca who is adorable. I'm not even really that opposed to spiders (unless they're HUGE AND SCARY LOOKING, cause at least they do something) but roaches are just disgusting. I promise you I do not lie about them being either HUGE or FLYING, esp. in the South. I had to kill one at my friend's apt the other day, because she's from the Midwest and had never seen one that big before, and I hit it and it like LEAPED at me. It was awful. Who wants to have something around that can live over a week with no head, and the only reason it dies is starvation? Freaky.

if ya see one so what, is it any different in a suburban area, What about all the huge bugs and field mice and such.

I live in the Bronx and we have had 2 outbreaks of water bugs and mice in my life. Not to big of a deal. I become friends with a mouse, I named it Rick.

If you just keep your food in the trashcan and take out your trash all the time and are just clean, you shouldn't have that big of a problem. We had one mouse problem, but that was because my suitemate kept food out all the time in bowls and didn't clean up anything. He was kinda dirty sometimes...

Be politically correct please.
They prefer to be called "people from New Jersey", not roaches.
Thank you.

Like I said earlier (before I was censored), there are mice/insects in NYU dorms. Not a big deal, however.

LOL @ goodusername

"...landfills were full...New Jersey was full...",

LMAO! Futurama!

I've seen rats running across campus every once in a while, but I've never seen rats or mice or anything in the dorms. Bed bugs on the other hand...
