I remember I read somewhere that its better to buy our own bed sets than the catalog ucla sent us... so I didn't order anything from it... yesterday during my lunch break at work I went to bedbathandbeyond to find my universal remote lol just kidding... but I found that i have no clue what to buy... so what should I buy for next year?

Well, you can start off here:

bedding to fit an extra long twin bed (36"x80")

some things not listed: electronic tea kettle if you like to make instant noodles, floor lamp (the main light in the room is harsh and it sucks... its like the lighting in a public restroom), clothes hangers, poster tape (as opposed to normal tape), headphones, power outlet thing (5-6 outlets), ethernet cord, air freshener, seat cushion, clothing iron, febreeze...

do they gave you anything like pillows or sheets? or do I have to buy everything?

buy everything .

they give you a mattress, bed frame, and a desk.

and a trashcan

careful about the tea kettle though. would be rather bad if you are caught.

dude fastmed,

if you can hide a microwave, youc an hide a tea kettle

you can buy your stuff at linen and things or bed bath and beyond since they are pretty cheap there. they have practically almost all the stuff u need

lol, do you put your microwave in the closet? i remember you asking me what floor i am on in terrace. what floor are you on?

ChanX,

are you sure it is cheap there? how cheap is cheap? i do not want to spend more than 50 with tax included on comforters and sheets and pillows. and no more than 200 total for all my college shopping (tea kettle, half of the minifridge, lamp, flashlight, random pills, febreeze, perhaps some sort of file cabinet, school supplies, etc) .

i was under the impression that bedbathandbeyond was quite a bourgeois shop.

you put it under your bed or behind the television and cover it with a cloth.
room inspection is not allowed to open anything.

I got XL bedsheets at Target for about 17 bux plus tax last year so...might try there? =)

i got xl bedsheets at ross for six bucks plus tax last year.

awesome $6. less than a lunch. thanks!

when ucla says that all that "fire hazard" stuff is restricted, are they really strict on it?

for example, i wanna bring a microwave, tea kettle thing for hot water, and maybe rice cooker? (cause I'm asian and I need my rice)
but yeah..I've heard people just bring it anyways, and even when I was in my OC's room during orientation, i saw a coffeemaker...
should i bring all those? do they check often?

fastMEd, you could try Chinatown.

Yea, go ahead. Really, fire hazards aren't as bad as they seem. We had a microwave and a hot water boiler. You can leave them uncovered, but cover them with a sheet (because RAs can't look for anything under a sheet because the sheet is your property, save for substances like beer and drugs) when:

You think your RA is about to go into your dorm for some reason

Your RA puts signs on your door stating that room inspections are going to be conducted that week.

so it has to be a xl for a twin right?

Right.

I found mine at JCPenney for about $20.

The bedding stuff isn't actually sent by UCLA. And contrary to what people claim, I wouldn't consider it a scam. The price is moderate and the quality is average. It's convenient for the lazy shopper. Seriously, a few years ago these items were hard-ish to find at retail stores; if they even carried that item, selection is limited. Luckily, it isn't too hard to find them these days.

Target's a good bet for stuff. They got a complete bedding set (2 sheets, pillowcase, sham, bedskirt) for $40. There were only like 4 designs at the store I went to. Also, they have solid color sheet sets (sheets, pillowcases) for $13 (was $8 last week). If you want, mattress pad/foam padding starts around $20 a piece.

Chances are though, you're gonna have to shop around at a few places and get things from here and there. Some places you might want to consider: BB&B, L&T, Macys, JCPenny, Kohls, etc.

I think you guys meant eletric water boiler... not a tea kettle btw, lol. :P

Yes, they are "strict" about fire hazards. Just don't get caught or actually have an accident. There are 2 official inspections with notice that narrows it down to a span of 1 week. And sometimes your RA will come by your room to let you know of events (what not) and depending on them, they might write you up, give a warning to have it disappear by a certain date, or just not care.
