Dorm Room Bedding

This might be a silly question to some, but I really don't know what to expect in the dorms...xD. So what kind of bedding sets (like those "bed-in-a-bag" things) should I buy to use in the dorms. I wouldn't want to buy something too elaborate or fancy and end up finding out that most people just have a set of sheets, pillow and comforter or vice versa. I saw this bed set from Bed Bath and Beyond: Jacoba Bed Set, 100% Cotton - Bed Bath & Beyond
...so is that set about right or still overkill?

This question can also be expanded to anything that incoming freshmans might need to buy for dormlife. I guess I just don't want to go over or under when buying dorm supplies and stand out like a sore thumb when I move-in ><".

I just bought a “bed in a bag” similar to that and I don’t care what everyone else uses! I love having tons of pillows and a cushy comforter! Makes a place feel more like home to me when there’s nice bedding.

The twin set doesn’t include all those pillows, which is probably good. I mean I love that look too, but your bed is tiny so you’re going to have to throw the pillows on the floor (gross) or elsewhere in your already cluttered dorm room when you want to sleep. It’s a little impractical to have that many in the dorms.

Side note, I moved off campus my 2nd year and promptly bought like, 7 pillows for my bed. So don’t worry :)

Speaking of which I just received a little catalog fold in from UCSD residencehall linens in the mail…

Are the items for sale in it a ripoff? Correct to assume yes?

^Sounds sketchy to me. I would doubt the quality of that sort of stuff.

Another note to all, make sure the thread count is decent in the sheets you buy. My roommate bought like 100 thread count sheets and they crunched every time she got in them. She had to throw them away quick. hahaha I felt bad.

I’m bringing two regular sized pillows, a body pillow, and two small pillows haha. And that’s the bare minimum that I sleep with.

Your bed will be the envy of your suitemates. Hahaha

Thanks for the insight! :slight_smile: I’m not using the catalog leukybear mentioned. Those looked questionable and expensive to me. And about the sheet quality…the set that I sited above has 200 thread count…so I hope that’s good enough. Gonna shop around a little more to see if there are other sets out there with good price-to-quality ratios.

100 thread count is so ghetto its not funny; that’s like inmate bedding… unless they get something better which I presume.

I bought the dorm-in-a-bag thing from Target for $35. It came with sheets, a comforter, a mattress pad, a pillow, two towels, four hand towels, and a useless laundry bag. Great deal.

Maybe I’m just bad at navigating the Target website but I can’t find a dorm-in-a-bag thing. And I’m just gonna bring a towel from home.

Hmm…I’m pretty sure shower sandals are kinda necessary, but what about bath robes? And do most people in dorms use a shower caddy, or do they usually just simply carry huge bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and bar of soap with their hands (on a second thought, how would we even store a bar of soap after each use…O.o). I don’t think I would want to just leave the soap in the bathroom…xD.

Yeah DO NOT LEAVE SOAP IN THE BATHROOM! Other people will use it, bleghhhh I would not risk that. Most people (including myself) had a shower caddy with shampoo, soap, conditioner, etc and I just kept it under my bed and brought it into the bathroom with me every time I showered. Some people leave their caddys in the bathroom but I was way too grossed out. Dorms are just sketch, IMO.

Also, I laughed out loud at leukybear’s post. hahahahah. the sheets really were the epitome of ghetto, be careful everyone!

i would never leave anything of mine in the bathroom! i’m taking a shower caddy with me. (i have a vision of a girl putting green hair dye into another girl’s shampoo bottle that was left in the shower; hey, girls can be vicious!)

Haha…the people you share a shower with are probably not that vicious. But honestly, if I’m out of shampoo and there’s a caddy with shampoo in it. I’m going to go ahead and use that. Don’t leave things out that you don’t want others to use.

I bought these really cheap sheets from target for like $10 bucks. It’s like 300 thread count though o.0. It was some college dorm sale thing but it was a great deal.

Is it even possible to use soap in college or do I need to start using body wash? I’m probably going to leave my caddy in the bathroom because it’ll probably get all wet and nasty in my dorm.

And about the alarm clock situation. If you sleep on a bunk bed where do you put it?

^You put your alarm clock on your desk, that way you’re forced to get up and turn it off.

@ingridbergman

I’m pretty sure the means you use to cleanse your body is personal preference. ;)

Is there already hand soap in the dorms, or do you need to bring it yourself? Does everyone have their own soap? If so wouldn’t that get annoying, brining your soap with you every time you want to wash your hands?

@figuresk8ting
I obviously don’t know the answer to your question, but maybe bring a bottle of hand sanitizer? That way you wouldn’t have to go all the way to the bathroom when you simply need to wash your hands :).

And about the body wash vs bar of soap thing…I think I’m gonna use body wash. Lugging a bar of soap, even with a container, seems kinda of messy to me.
