bed size

I'm reading conflicting information on white size sheets/mattress pad to get for the beds. Will regular size twin sheets fit the dorm beds? Would extra long be a better fit. Someone clear this up for me, please.
Thank you

extra long twin size fit my son's bed in Kissam - i think all freshmen mattresses are the same size - i called Housing last summer to find out the mattress size - sorry i don't remember the measurements exactly

We had the same question last year--we called housing and were told that regular twin sheets would fit. However, the beds are actually longer than standard size, so to be safe we bought extra long fitted sheets and they were fine. If your sheet's fitted pockets are extra deep they would probably fit, but personally, I would go with the extra long size.

Thanks for the help. I'm a Blair mom :)

Now I'm trying to find an extra long mattress pad. I can find them on line but not in stores. Did any of use one for your student's bed?

Hi:
We had no problem finding them at Linens and Things and/or Bed,Bath, and Beyond in the summer before school started. They stock those special sizes seasonally, so I would check with them. Good luck.

ok thanks. any other suggestions for dorm stuff? first time college mom .....

I got an extra-long mattress pad and cover from JCPenney catalog, but I also saw them at Bed, Bath and Beyond and Linens and Things. They have lots of dorm stuff. We also ordered a cart for holding my son's microfridge from The Container Store. It held his food, dishes, kitchen stuff, etc. and gave him some much-needed extra storage. http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=77230&PRODID=73640

Thanks. I found the mattress pad at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Just wondering, what did you use to lug all your sons clothing? Boxes, suitcases, trash bags?

I wouldn't recommend bringing more than you can haul in a couple of suitcases or a small trunk--the rooms, closet space, etc. are limited in size. You should use good judgment as to what he really needs and leave the rest at home. You also have to keep in mind how he will store things at the end of the school year or get his things home. We eliminated a lot of items based on that problem alone.

We are local, so we didn't "pack" things. We just sort of threw it all in the car(s). If your son/daughter gets a single room in Kissam Quad, there are no doors on the closets. You can just leave it that way, if you want. The door to the dorm room opens across the closet, so the closet is exposed only when the door is closed. We bought a tension rod and a pair of curtains at Walmart. One of the curtain panels was a perfect fit to hang over the closet space. I think the size of the panel was about 42 x 84 - we used one with a tab top. I used the material from the other curtain panel to cover some throw pillows for the bed.

The mattresses are coated in plastic and somewhat hard, so I strongly recommend that you consider an egg crate for under the matress pad for the additional comfort. I second bandmom's advice on not bringing too much. By year end, D had WAY TOO MUCH stuff and it was a nightmare to get it all home. We took a carload home after finals and then hauled the rest home following S's commencement activities. I strongly urged her to store things in Towers storage, but both children assured me it is something of a pain to arrange storage as there are limited hours (minutes) for entering storage rooms during finals week. The Move Crew students will be a tremendous help getting it all in; just remember, it will be entirely up to student/you to get it out next May!

My son used UPS for storage at year end. They contracted with Vanderbilt and set up registration areas around campus (right in the dorms) for a week or so during finals. Fortunately, one of the areas was in his own dorm in Kissam quad, so on a day of his choosing during that week, he had to just take his stuff downstairs (boxes, trunk, refrigerator, etc.). UPS checked it in, moved it into storage, and will deliver it back on whatever day he wants it next August (around move in time). They were a little pricey ($280 for the entire summer for as much as he wanted to store that would fit in a 5 x 5 space), but it was worth it for the convenience since he didn't have a car or another way to haul his stuff himself to a storage facility. It was less expensive than us having to drive up to haul him and his stuff back (and drive him/stuff back to school next August). He flew home and shipped a couple of smaller boxes via FedEx, which was just across the street from campus.

They have some super soft quality sheets in x-long sizes.

One example:

The Vandy Bookstore has everything you need for bedding, too. A set of XL twin sheets is 29.95. My son used the comforter we bought at the bookstore last year and it held up quite well - he will use it again this year. They also have a poster sale the first week of school with a great selection. I think you can even order the bedding items online in advance or you can always buy them as soon as you arrive. There is an Office Depot right across the street from campus, too (easy walking distance from the freshmen dorms).

Thanks for all the info. One more month until Doreways!! I'm a little nuts pulling stuff off the shelves at Target and Walmart. I saw a microwave cart similar to the one at the container store but for $30. Is there really room for that?

The cart we ordered from The Container Store went under the refrigerator, and the microwave sat on top of the refrigerator, so it really didn't take any extra room. It was great because it provided storage with slide out shelves/drawers for snacks, plates, forks, etc. We bought a separate refrig and microwave bc it was much cheaper than the microfridge Vandy offered for sale to the students. However, we are local so it was convenient for us to buy and take to the dorm room. I think if you purchase it in advance from Vandy, they have it ready and waiting for you on move-in day - which might be worth the extra money. You really don't have room for much extra stuff in the dorm rooms.

I'd recommend bringing a bike (especially if you live in Kissam)!

Our living room is filling up with moving stuff, Squirrel Camp, dorm stuff, how will the clothes fit in. Very strange.
