What to do the summer before college?

I'm a current high school senior. What did you do before you went to college, and what did you wish you could have done? Internship or get a job, chill, study, go crazy, or open house... any tips?

I had some fun. Get a summer job if you want.

I went to my first convention (for my eighteenth birthday) in LA and had an amazing time. Mostly I just bummed around on the beach and went to house parties, totally chilling out with friends.

It was a great summer. Got all the “party” out so I could concentrate better during the school year. Definitely recommend.

I did absolutely nothing. I couldn’t get a job even though I applied to I think to 5 places. I just hung out more than usual since I had a car to drive around in, read LOTS of books, and became a lazy bum. Ohhh yeah.

45 hour per week paid internship and took a history class for funsies.

I had an 40 hours/week internship in DC for a month, had 2 part time jobs at home and then just hung out with my friends & watched a ton of movies the rest of the time.

My advice: Definitely don’t study before college if you can help it (unless you are seriously behind in something). You want to be able to enjoy this break! Catch up on your favorite book series and spend time doing your hobbies because in college you will most likely not have time for many hobbies/pleasure reading. Hang out with your high school friends a lot, because if you are going to school away from home you likely won’t be able to hang out with them in the same way again. Also if you forsee that you will be broke in college (a likely occurrence unless your parents are generous and loaded), definitely get at least a part time job during the summer. I had “a lot” of money in high school but I didn’t have anything to pay for then…in college you soon realize that life on your own is costly, and it’d be awesome if you had a bunch of money saved up from high school to spend. If you party, party plenty and learn your alcohol limits before you come to college (so you don’t experience many of the typical freshmen mistakes).

How the hell do high schoolers get internships, let alone paid ones?

I worked 40 hours/week and slept a lot and was mostly lazy when I wasn’t working.

I think you should get a job, you will be super grateful for the extra cash next year at college! But make sure it is a job you enjoy and that you still have some free time.

Eurotrip!!!

I went to Disney World… then did pretty much nothing for the rest of the summer.

Getting a job isn’t a bad idea if your parents/grandparents won’t be sending you money. (I have a bunch of friends whose parents/grandparents send them money once or twice a month. I wish I was that lucky.) Save up some money for the semester. I definitely had some friends who blew through a lot of cash very quickly, so getting a summer job is always a plus.

Summer goes by quickly. Spend it well. It’s your last summer before you’re out on your own, so don’t waste it worrying about college.

YES!!

Agree with others here - relax, have fun, and spend time with friends/family. Get a job if you can, but don’t break your back to find internships or anything. Personally, I went to India for a month to visit family, and otherwise I mostly just hung out with friends, went places, played video games, went to orientation, etc. The only work-related thing I did was read up on some biology just so that I didn’t go the entire 3 months without doing something productive. Keep in mind that, unless you have an incredibly easy schedule or are able to do well without studying much (which I would think is really rare in college), you won’t be able to fully relax again and enjoy life until winter break, and not even Thanksgiving unless you get a week off and don’t have major assignments or exams.
