If you score below 600 in English SAT, and English is a second language, CMU requires TOEFL!

If your English SAT score is below 600 and you are a native English speaker, do you bother to apply? Assume math/science scores are stellar.

It varies from school to school, but the SAT numbers which are here for last year http://my.cmu.edu/site/admission/menuitem.edce48707aab43c019300710d4a02008/ represent the middle 50% of SAT scores. So there are almost certainly kids with SATs below 600 at least at most of the schools, maybe not so many in Computer Science and the BHA/BSA program. We don't know though how many were native speakers and low scorers. A good number are foreign I'd guess as approximately 20% of CMU students are internationals.

I do remember that my Harvard roommate many moons ago (Bengali attending the American School in Paris) was forced to take the TOEFL despite over 600 SAT scores.

I believe that the official number is that 10% of undergrads are international students, though that doesn't include students born abroad that are now permanent residents and may not be native English speakers.

That could be - the 20% number included grad students (all I found on the CMU website) and I know at many schools there are far more international grad students than undergrads.

I need to return to the issue -- forget the numbers game of looking at cold sterile numbers on paper.

If the school implies a weakness in English if the score is below 600 in English SAT for foreign students, what would they presume if native speaker is below 600? I would have to presume that they think little about admtting such a student. After all, "The purpose of the TOEFL® test is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English." Logically, CMU questions the proficiency if below 600 in English SAT.

Better yet -- should native speakers take TOEFL®to establish proficiency? Sounds ludicrous, but the interpretations are fairly rational.
