My first language is Chinese. I learned English when I was four. Thus, Chinese is my "native" language, and as a result, I have to take the TOEFL for Carnegie Mellon, which is quite hilarious considering I got a 790 in the SAT Critical Reading section. Can I just say that I am a native English speaker and not take it?

If you have a citizenship/residency, I’m pretty sure you don’t have to. But even if you don’t have it, call them and check if there’s a way you can not take it xD I mean, TOEFL is pretty expensive D: I had to take it and the whole test is not that fun, either.

I’m pretty sure you should be fine. Like kyxlauren said if you’re a permanent resident or have citizenship definitely don’t take it. English isn’t my “native” language either but that doesn’t mean i don’t know it at a native level. Also if you’ve been in a school that instructs in english for a substantial amount of time you’re definitely set.

I had this problem too. I came here from russia when I was 3, and so Russian was my native languadge, so CMU required toefl even though I have a 1510 combined writing+reading sat. I Called CMU, told them my situation, and they were cool with me not taking the toefl. Make sure to call them though.

mhm i think their official policy is that if you selected anything other than english you MUST take TOEFL regardless of your SAT score, etc. but i think its very likely that if your critical reading+writing score is high enough, they will overlook the toefl in favor of the sat/act.

oh and they should have sent you an email asking whether you would have scheduled a toefl or would just like them to evaluate your application without toefl.
