Benefits between UF and UM

I recently got accepted into University of Florida and just took a campus tour. I also got into the University of Miami and received a substantial scholarship. I liked both colleges a lot. Besides the monetary issue, what is the benefit of going to UF over UM? What is your opinion of the dorms at either UM or UF?

UF = public = full scholarship paid by bright futures, tuition
UF = the college life, typical college town. good times
UM = its miami
UM = private college, but more choices of residency. you live in a city not a college town

id never go to UM and im going to UF AND i live in miami

I also live in Miami and would not consider UM. Beside the monetary issue I just don't like their facilities. I took an engineering tour last year and it just seemed below par. But I do know people from out of town who seem happy there and I have a friend who really wants to go there for neuroscience. But most of my friends that got into UM are going to UF just because they like it better.

UM has a much smaller student body. The classes are smaller at UM. The weekend nightlife at UM revolves around going clubbing in trendy South Beach whereas at UF the kids go clubbing to "college bars" near the Main St. section of Gainesville. Greek scene is more visible at UF. Both schools have decent amount of school spirit but the Gators Growl can be heard from the stadium for about 5 blocks on game day! Are you a Gator Fan or a Canes Fan?

I think you have more options at UF in terms of courses, majors, research/internship opportunities, and personal resources. Now UM is a good school, but I think UF has a lot more to offer. But what do you want to study?

I want to study business. Thanks for your help!!

I live in miami and ive been accepted to both UF and UM and honestly im more of a fan of UM at least for pre med. Its a much better undergrad school and if you get into the premed program you are garanteed admission to the grad med school which is pretty sick. plus you can do your residency at jackson.

If you go to Miami, you're about 700% more likely to get shot. Not just than if you go to UF, pretty much anywhere. Also, UF is more practical unless you're doing pre-med.

That was 17 years ago.

Pre-med is also good at UF. McKnight Brain Institute, Nanoscale Research Institute (in 2009), Cancer/Genetics Research Center, SHANDS/UF, Academic Research Center. UF Med is ranked higher than UMia Med. UF Med has one of the highest STEP 1 scores in the country. The crime rate is much lower than miami. More likely to leave UF with zero debt. If my memory serves me right all our grad programs are ranked higher than UMia (but not 100% sure).

lol cornll, are you really trying to compare Miami's crime rate to Gainesville?

We spent last weekend in Gainesville and I'm still trying to figure out what there is to do besides eat and drink. Football games only go to the end of November. I will say that the town is very supportive of the college. There wouldn't be a Gainesville if there was no UF. It was kind of fun seeing all the businesses painted in orange and blue, pictures of gators in stores and restaurants. There was even a mural of a gator on the side of the US Post Office. That was fun for a weekend.......but seriously.......what is there to do?

If you want info about UF & Gainesville this is a great site!

What do you do on a typical non-football weekend?

Play sports, go to Southwest to workout, go eat and catch a movie with friends, then maybe go to a party or two and then do some homework on Sunday night is usually my weekend. Every once and a while, we'll go to Lake Wauburg, it's a lot of fun.

And you're forgetting that there is basketball season after football is over, so no worries. :)

EDIT: Here is the website for Lake Wauburg. In addition, look at the main site of the link and you'll find a lot of great stuff.

Volleyball! Dont forget the Volleyball! Kicks A$$!
