Hello everyone. I, as well as many others, got emails today about the Berkeley Regents Program. However, there are alot of points I'm not 100% sure about, so I'd appreciate it if some of you guys could help me.

1) What are the odds of even getting the scholorship?

2) By receiving this email, I assume I'm 100% gaurunteed into UCB?

3) How does this overnight sleepover work? Do I just show up there for my interview and stay right after? Do I have to bring a sleepingbag etc? Do I need to sign up somewhere for it?

I'll post more questions if they come up, and other people please post your questions too if you have any! Hopefully we can all help each other out :)!

darthpepper, I think that was just a typo, right? My DS got the invite so I’ll try to help with your questions.

You must register for the ROHP. I think registration just opened up today and you also have to send in a liability waiver before you go. Here is the page that has the information and link to register: [RCSA ROHP](http://rcsa.berkeley.edu/rohp) Scroll down to “How do I sign up” to see the link. It will take you to the page to pick your date and apply. They ask a few things like what size shirt you wear and what foods you like as well as what your major will be. Right below that link is the waiver form that you have to send in. I think you can either fax or mail it in. That page has all the information about what to bring and what the tentative schedule will be and it looks like FUN!

Did you already sign up for your interview? If so, try to plan your overnight around that time. My DS signed up for an afternoon interview that will end right before the overnight program starts at 5 pm. Some kids do the overnight first and then do the interview the next morning. The benefit of going on a Friday vs the weekend is that you can sit in on some classes. DS has a heavy school load and can’t miss class so he’ll go over the weekend.

2) By receiving this email, I assume I’m 100% guaranteed into UCB?

YES! Go back and reread your email. “As a Regents and Chancellors Scholarship candidate, your admission to the University of California, Berkeley for the fall 2013 semester has been assured.” It says your admittance is ASSURED! This is different from past years where they waited until you arrived for your interview and then told you that you were accepted. You are IN unless you fail to complete your requirements or get below a 3.0 gpa.

1) What are the odds of even getting the scholorship?

It is hard to find out the exact odds but they invite around 1000 and in the end, have about 200 Regents Scholars enroll. I read that they may offer as many as 400 in hopes that at least 200 students enroll at Cal but older posts indicate more are offered. Here is some more info from an old CC post from 2006 so it’s sure to be outdated: “they actually extend more than 200 offers. They invite about 1000 candidates to interview, and extend offers to about 600, about 200 of whom matriculate.”

It looks like the odds are a little better at Cal than UCLA but if anyone else has more information, we’d all be interested!

@Unsurewoop
This is all based on rumours from a friend who interviewed for regents last year but didn’t get in. He says that the overnight is actually important to your regents assessment. I have no idea how… Are they going to analyze your snore pattern during the night? Since there’s no essay or anything else outside of the interview, I assume the interview is also really important. If you’re just interested in getting admitted to UCB, no it won’t affect your admission as long as you meet requirements and such. If you’re talking about regents admission, I’d say it will affect it greatly.

Unsurewoop, I agree with Wendeli that declining to interview for Regents would put you out of the running for the award. However, it will not affect your admission since you have already been admitted! Many students don’t interview because they don’t need the money since it’s $2500 unless you have financial need then it can be more. Many students already have substantial AP credits to give them priority registration so they may not care about the benefits.

Wendeli, I have heard that many students skipped ROHP but still had a good interview and got Regents so I am positive the overnight experience is NOT part of determining who gets the Regents. ROHP is supposed to be fun and give the prospective students a feel for what Berkeley has to offer as well as give them an opportunity to meet some of the other students. I think they make it fun and try to convince the kids to come to Cal. If you go, enjoy and don’t worry that it is just one more thing they are judging you on-it’s NOT!

1) What are the odds of even getting the scholorship?

Regents’ usually awards the scholarship to 200 students for each entering year, but they usually offer the scholarship to more students to account for any who might decide to go to another university. While I’m not part of the scholarship office, it is usually not anywhere as high as 600/1000; there’s only one year that that happened in my memory, and it was a shocking anomaly to everyone to whom I talked about it.

2) By receiving this email, I assume I’m 100% gaurunteed into UCB?

Yes - congratulations on your admittance to Cal!

3) How does this overnight sleepover work? Do I just show up there for my interview and stay right after? Do I have to bring a sleepingbag etc? Do I need to sign up somewhere for it?

fidoprincess answered this perfectly, so I won’t bother retyping all of that.

Unsurewoop - not going to the interview will disqualify you for the scholarship, but it will not affect your admission to Berkeley. Barring extreme circumstances, I would recommend you do the interview because 1) you have nothing to lose and everything to gain, and 2) even if money/prestige is not an issue for you, getting interviewing experience is very helpful!

Wendeli - your friend as absolutely wrong; ROHP has no affect whatsoever on your selection for the scholarship award. It is completely run by current scholars who try to give prospective freshmen the “insider’s guide” to what college life is like at Cal. We also, of course, try very hard to persuade you to join our community while you’re here with us. Once you’ve been offered the interview, then that is the only thing that they take into account (besides your original college application) for awarding the scholarship.

Hope this helps!

PS - as for credibility, I’m a current Regents’ Scholar at Cal and am very involved with the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholars Association (RCSA).
