Berkeley's CalSO

Huh. Mine says: "You cannot yet update your schedule.
Come back during or after your Phase 1 appointment time: Mon Jun 05 08:00:00 PDT 2006"

Are you sure you're logging into telebears and not bearfacts?

"Adviser Code Required:

Phase I access to Tele-BEARS for new undergraduates is coordinated with academic advising and course planning assistance at CalSO orientation programs. Students attending summer CalSO programs will receive their Adviser Codes and enroll through Phase I while attending. If you are unable to attend a CalSO program, you must log on to the CalSO website (calso.berkeley.edu) and hit the "I can't attend" link at the bottom of the Welcome page. After you complete that section, your Adviser Code and Phase I appointment time will be sent to you at the end of June or early July (this date depends on your school or college). If you have any questions, please contact the CalSO office at 510-642-4970. "

The link you went to is useless--you aren't supposed to click into fall 2006 like you did; you are supposed to click for your telebears appointment. Mine also says: "Come back during or after your Phase 1 appointment time: Mon Jun 05 08:00:00 PDT 2006" in that section. That only means, again, the beginning of CalSO orientations.

Hmm. I wonder why they gave me a regular appointment. Maybe I don't need an advisor code?

Well, then there's conflicting information. One place tells you to wait for an appointment, and another tells you you have one. I dunno.

You won't be able to register till CalSO.

hey guys, I have questions.
I just submited my SIR to Cal, and I also signed up for orientation on Jun 22. What I don't understand is I did not get any advisor code/appointment nor can log in to the telebears. Do I miss something? Do I need to register for telebears account?

Any advice will be appreciated!! ^^

Yazi, it took me a couple of day to get my CalNet ID and CalMail working after I paid my SIR fee. For sure it'll work without your SLR (as I have yet to do mine). Just wait it out a little bit. The system's probably trying to get all its ducks in a row and making sure youre legit.

I really take into consideration the feedback I receive from you guys. perhaps, cuz you guys are the cream of the crop =) I just didnt think it was necessary to go to CalSO because I was planning to go to the very last one on July 13th. The website says those who arent attending receive their registration date from the end of June until early July.

I understand everyone's point about connections to advisers, but I have this feeling it's gonna be "get 'em in, get 'em out" type of deal and less advising just because of the amount of people and the limited time they have. I'm going to Vegas with a handful of recent Cal graduates in a week so I'll ask them about CalSO, if they say it's worth the schedule rearrangement, I'll probably figure out a way.

Are you guys seriously gonna stick your parents into the campus housing for that weekend? Do they have to shower in those community showers haha

You don't get that. You get to register for your first 10.5 units (telebears phase 1) at CalSO.

hah...I have a parent coming for early arrival. I think one of the important things, at least in my case, about CalSO is having the parent come. And it's not a weekend--that's the freshmen I think you are talking about, freshmen CalSO. And do those really qualify as "community showers"? When I hear that I think of like a big empty area with showerheads on the wall.

community showers.

The exact reason for deciding on off campus housing.

Some dorms have nice shower stalls with doors and it isn't bad--IF you wear sandals. But I don't know what Berkeley's are like.

Yeah, I'm anxious to check out the dorms at Berkeley; I will be staying in them for a few nights during CalSO. I have already made a couple arrangements to see some rooms for rent in houses and apartments around campus, but I still will be registering for guaranteed on-campus housing as a backup. I'm conflicted though, I would like to have that college experience, but on the other hand, I want privacy. It sucks they don't have more single rooms available. Oh well.

It's actually too early to do a real off campus search. July is the time. I guess they put you in Unit 3 for CalSO; maybe Spens Black? I wonder where parents stay...

yeah, my Dad is staying in the dorms too; I'm not sure which one though...

After much searching, I did find a few places on craig's list that seemed worth checking out.. It was pretty challenging finding something other than summer shares for rent though. I guess I will find out in a few weeks if these off-campus rooms are worth considering and whether or not on-campus is completely out of the question.

I'm in the same situation--the hard part I think at this point is having to decide what preferences to put for on-campus by June 5...

I have no idea what to put as my preferences either..I was thinking of only putting single room suites, hoping I get lucky. I know if don't "win the lottery" and get one of my five preferred rooms, then I am not guaranteed housing. So, that's defintely a dilemma considering I am not guaranteed off campus housing from craig's list either. lol

So yeah, I totally understand.

Make that three Gabe, I'm still torn on wha to do, but have been leaning more towards living on campus recently.

I decided to live on-campus a while ago, but I can't decide for the life of me where.

Well, I've also been advised that you should do what you can with (i.e. hassle) the housing office. A tip for dealing with the bureaucracy at Berkeley: always be ready to work hard for your case.

For those who are going to CalSO (or visiting Berkeley in general), can you upload lots of pictures--maybe on PhotoBucket?--especially of the different dorms? Pretty please? :) :) :)

I will probably be taking pictures when I'm up there. I'll post them.

Anyway..know this is way off topic..but in about 2 hours I will be taking MY LAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE FINAL!! What is so weird is, after today, the next classroom I step into will be at Berkeley..

SO FREAKIN EXCITING!!! =)

i believe that's called prison or a locker room. i spent the night there once at Laloma (sp?) near Foothill cuz that's where my friend stayed her first year. i remember the suites having a bathroom just for the girls (so about 4 dorm rooms or 8 girls) sharing 2 tubs and 2 stalls.

i got some advice. i would bring a copy of my trasncripts up to CalSO, because the advisers really have nothing to work off besides what you verbalize to them...

i wouldnt mind living on-campus with other fellow bears, but a single room in a suite at about $1,000 is just over my budget. since i am paying for school myself and dont have financial aid (Unless i get the Alumni Leadership Award) then i'm completely depending on a small student loan/income/savings to get me through). it's one of the main reasons why i'm looking for off campus housing.

i've been using craigslist too! i think i need to find some untapped housing resources.
