Anyone know anything about Berkeley's Pre-Med or how it is? Is it a "pathway" or is it a major? Also, how is the advising for pre-med?

Thanks!!

no such thing as a "premed" major. Advising for a pathway would probably be through career center or your respective dept. staff. I havent tried the former much, but they seem to do a good job.

how difficult is it to get a few years of research experience under a faculty adviser?

PreMed:
The Pre-med advising is fairly extensive, given the fact that you seek it out. No program on on campus will coddle you, if you expect handholding then Berkeley is probably not right for you. The pre-med program consists of a list of courses that one should take; there is no premed major. However by nature, certain majors fulfill all of the pre-med requirements and provide relevant and useful upper division courses (Such as MCB), but the choice is up to you.

Research:
Depends on your qualifications and ability to connect with professors. I have found it relatively easy to speak to professors...

You can:
Initiate your own research project (once you get a handle of techniques)
Work on faculty/Graduate projects by asking them directly.
Join up via the URAP program (or the like)

There is also a URAP (Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program) which admits a large number of students to various faculty initiated projects.

The great thing about Berkeley's size and penchant for research is that there is a large number of research positions open on and near campus (and at CHORI, UCSF)

about research,

You have to take initiative! As long as you recognize the fact that professors probably won't give you a call and beg you to work in their labs, then you are on the right track. Just be motivated and you will be surprised by how many opportunities that are out there on the berkeley campus.
