best backpack?

what's the best backpack for college? something that can fit a smallish laptop, and is water resistant and not horribly ugly or expensive, please :)

...I hate backpacks and haven't carried one since, well, elementary school. I am curious to see the recs as I'm not so sure I'll be able to get away without one in college.

haha if anything, college is the best time to not have a backpack. Classes are so spread out, very rarely do you need to bring textbooks to class, so just grab a pencil and notebook, head out and you're set for the day :).
Ellafunt, if you want to carry a laptop around, I definitely recommend getting a backpack specifically made for laptops or your computer will get beat up pretty quickly.

Anovice, how did you get through high school without a backpack? Mine is with me always.

The best backpack is the North Face Borealis or Jester. If you're looking for something a little cheaper, go Jansport.

yeaaaaa i got a borealis, represent.

I actually carry around a laptop case, it works well.

i have a snug padded laptop case, and my laptop is a wonderful little 12" powerbook so i can stick it into most normal sized backpacks...i'm kind of afraid of the north face ones because although they look ever so hardcore and cool, they make me look like a midget freshman with way too many books...which i will be, but still!

I got a Jansport laptop case at a jansport outlet, and it's great as a backpack or as a laptop bag.

dakine has a lifetime warranty. mine ripped. i sent it to them. they mailed me a brand new one.

So do a lot of people actually take notes with the laptop? Does that thing even fit on the tiny flaps of wood they call desks?

i dont know anybody who takes notes on a laptop. but yes they fit on the desks.

computerized notes are useful. You can search them for a topic, read them because they're legible, edit them without splotches, copy them for a friend without any hassle etc. I think for the large lecture classes I might want to take notes via laptop. More personal classes I wouldn't want to be hiding behind a computer screen. I think i'll get a cheapo laptop to take notes on, and have a *****in system for my room because thats where I'll be working.

it's all about l.l. bean

Music Student here- I don't normally carry around a laptop with me to take notes, as most of the classes I take require diagramed notes that would be to awkward for a word processor to handle or are performance classes. I still have a huge, spacious Swiss backpack with lots of room for all of my music and stuff, with big pads on the back and straps to make skateboarding comfortable. Music majors tend to have very busy schedules and often have 2 or 3 classes in a row.

I got a Cross-town 2.0 from eBags for $16 last year. Very durable, waterproof, not too big, but big enough for my textbooks and notebooks, and definitely a laptop.

<a href="http://www.ebags.com/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=EndecaSearch&N=0&D=cross-town+2.0&Ntt=cross-town+2.0%5B/url%5D">http://www.ebags.com/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=EndecaSearch&N=0&D=cross-town+2.0&Ntt=cross-town+2.0</a></p>

a jansport of course.

i have a columbia that rocksssssssss!!!

I usually use some sort of larger sized tote. Bookbags have never been super comfy for me and it's honestly just easier to stick stuff in shoulder bag and go. I plan on getting one of those neoprene snug cases for my laptop so i can stick that in my bag to go to the library and such

why can't you just go to the store and find your own ******* backpack? some people have no common sense and want everyone else to do all their work.

Well sometimes you want a second opinion before you waste $50+ on a poorly made bag. I have a jansport bag called elefunk. It has room for a laptop and severall notebooks and books and it doesn't look so dorky.
