Which back near or on campus is the best based on student experience?

Also, should I get a savings or checking account because I planning to set up BruinDirect this coming winter quarter.

Washington Mutual

I'm pretty sure you can only use a checking account to set up BruinDirect, but I might be wrong.

I think you're correct.

why would anyone want to open up a savings account in a bank anyway

I signed up for a savings account, but I'm still not quite sure why.

Go for Wamu.

Free Checks (with designs!!!... not the crappy, generic ones), ATM in Ackerman, Free Online Banking, 3% back on debit purchases, free account with/without direct deposit.

I'll go set up my checking account with Washington Mutual tomorrow.

do it online and get a free 5.00% APY savings account!! (i think i told you this in another thread). the offer is not available at branches. for comparison, their regular savings account has 0.20% APY with a $3 monthly fee unless you have more than $300 in it. so free 5.00% APY savings is nothing to sneeze at, you get 25 times more interest for free! maybe you dont need it now, but just keep like $1 in it so it stays open until you actually use it later on in your life. :)

i want that savings account, but i already have checking with them and that offer is for new customers only. :(

I keep my money in ING direct and get 10 bucks monthly in interest...it's practically nothing but pays for the monthly haircut

I thought WAMU has no minimum balance requirement...what if you already had a WAMU account? Can I 'upgrade'?

what's the point of upgrading a Wamu account?

wamu free checking has no minimum balance (well i think you need $1 to open it).

the regular statement savings account has a $300 min balance to avoid the $3 monthly service charge.

Citan, i keep mine in my Citi e-Savings, also with 5.00% APY. theres lots of internet savings accounts to choose from (EmigrantDirect, HSBCdirect, ING, GMAC, CapitalOne, etc etc). the benefit to the citi e-savings (and i'm pretty sure the WaMu promo) is that you can access your money at any branch, at any ATM, and do instant transfers between it and your checking.

if you had the OLD free checking account, you can upgrade to the new WaMu Free Checking for free at any teller. i did this a few months ago. you gain free checks for life, the gold rewards debit card, and probably some small things i'm not remembering.

interesting....but it seems they have a monthly charge

i think i still have the old one. i was referring to upgrading to the 5% APY account. i have the gold card, but i don't think i get free checks. i'll walk to WAMU and check it out tomorrow.

I did get the 5% account, but it does say that they can change the APR at any time at their discretion. I figured they'd just keep it for like a month, that's crazy for it to be higher than a CD.
