I'm planning to self study SAT 2 US History to take the test on November, which gives me around 5 months to prepare. I'm wondering if it is possible for me to get a high score on the test (750 to 800) based only on heavy studying of study guides, taking practice tests, but no reading of textbooks?

I plan on using the AMSCO study guide.

If you think a textbook is necessary, please state which one you think would be most helpful!

*I have little to no previous knowledge of US history, besides taking AP US gov last year.

AMSCO, Kaplan’s SAT review (has a lot of small details that may be overlooked when reading AMSCO), Crash Course (not necessary), and Spark Notes free online tests.

That combination should get you a pretty good score.

I only took Honors US history and used Barrons for like 2 weeks before the test. It helped a lot. Hard tests, but it was worth it. I recommend it! :)

SparkNotes was a complete relief. I thoroughly read it a week before the test, scribbled through a few of its practice tests, and felt fairly confident on the exam date. I probably scored between 670 and 720, but you could easily use SparkNotes supplemented with another resource to aim higher.

Use Kaplan’s! There were up to 5 questions on the Kaplan’s practice test that were literally on the SAT II Exam. For example, the political cartoon of the nativists discriminating against immigrants…that was on one of the Kaplan’s practice exams. I used to hate and stay away from Kaplan because its SAT 12 Practice Tests was crap…but now I am extremely impressed with them and I’ll probably use them for studying Lit.
