I have Verizon as well, and have been very pleased with reception on campus. The signal was extremely weak last semester, but they improved the coverage during the holiday break. Other people may have their favorites, but I get reception everywhere on campus except in the deepest basements.

I wouldnt bother changing your phone number, especially if lots of people back home know your current number. I kept my Atlanta number, and it hasnt been an issue. Everyones plan seems to have free roaming and long distance, so the area code is really irrelevant.

Hey, welcome to CC. We did discuss this recently if you'd like to check it out: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=160056

But to quickly answer your question, Verizon used to be the worst service here on campus, but they seemed to have erected a new reception tower or something recently, because many people say it has gotten better.

And don't worry about changing your number. I myself didn't, and I know many who haven't either.

Most large carriers (Verizon, Cingular, T-Mobile) work quite well in big areas such as downtown.

T-Mobile myself...works good

Cingular works perfectly for me. Unless you have a reason to change, I recommend keeping your home area code and number. It makes you feel connected to home, and it makes the phone numbers of students here unique. When you find someone else with the same area code in their phone number, you might find out that you came from the same area and didn't know it :)
