I'm on a local cell phone service plan that doesn't work too well...anywhere except my hometown basically haha. So I'm switching providers this summer.

What cell phone service provider gets the best reception and works best on the UM campus and in Ann Arbor in general?

Verizon is generally thought of as having the best service in southeastern Michigan but in U-M buildings the service can vary from really good to non-existent.

I have Verizon and it works great. My roommate had AT & T and he never got signal. Not sure about T-Mobile and Sprint or others, but I’ve heard from most people Verizon is best coverage today. But who knows, if At & T and T-Mobile end up merging, the extra spectrums might give them the advantage.

why do people still care about coverage on campus nowadays? Most outdoor spaces on campus are pretty well covered by the majors either way. If you are indoors, every UM building and food joints have wifi and you can just use wifi calling. They call it UMA on blackberry.

I’ve never heard of UMA and don’t know if my blackberry has it. That’s probably why people still care. I used to know how to dial a number on a phone without pushing any of the numbers but it would only work on a wired land line if you can find one anymore.

I don’t know anything about phones, but I have to wonder if some of it has to do with the phone itself. I have ATT and literally have never not had signal anywhere in the country, including in basements and at football games. I’ve NEVER not had signal in the six or so years I’ve been a cell phone owner. My sister, however, also has ATT and doesn’t get signal in certain parts of our house. I never have that problem. The only thing I could guess is that it has something to do with our phones since we have different models-- but ironically she has a much nicer phone than I do.

Based on my own experience I would recommend ATT, but it doesn’t sound like everyone gets as good of a signal as I do. o.O

Just wanna add something to my earlier post – AT&T has terrible reception (next to zero) at football games in the big house. It might be because everyone is calling/using the network in a small confined area, but I have a feeling that south campus, especially the big house, doesn’t get a lot of coverage. Just my two cents.

I don’t think anyone gets good coverage during football games because there are too many people in one place all using their phones at the same time.

Yeah, I sometimes can get texts out at football games, but its hit or miss.

Be safe, go with Verizon. The only reason anyone had for not getting Verizon was cuz they wanted an iPhone (god knows why), and now you can get one.

Go with T-Mobile if you want to carry around a brick…virtually no reception in Angell/Mason Hall, even worse in Lorch hall. Worst of all, I lived in Oxford where I was never able to pick up its service.
