Best Dorms/Housing

I am a junior transfer to UNC, I was hoping for some advice on what dorm or on campus apartment people thought were the best. Is there a big advantage to the dorms on north campus opposed to living on mid or central campus?? Any thoughts are welcomed and appreciated!!

The dorms on North Campus are a little bit nicer, and closer to classes. Also, being on south campus in one of those high rises, aka Hinton James, E-Haus, and Craig, is a freshman experience. Probably something you would not want to be a part of.

North: Close to the main campus, thus classes, nicer facilities (compared to some old South Campus dorms), but smaller rooms. I heard McIver and Winston are nice. Hall style.

Middle: There are only four (excluding Whitehead); Carmichael, Teague, Parker, Avery. In the middle of the main campus and the south campus, being somewhat close to both, but not that close to both at the same time. In case of Carmichael and Teague, they maintain approximately the same distance from Lenoir Hall and the Rams Head facilities. Parker Community (Parker, Teague, and Avery) has the largest rooms on campus with suite style, meanwhile Carmichael has much smaller rooms with hall style (I think? I forgot.)

South: Well, the South campus is where the majority of residence halls are located. As packerfan89 said, Hinton James, Eringhaus, and Craige are typical Freshmen dorms, so avoid them. Morrison is the northernmost building, and has a decent facility. Hardin, Craige North are also not that pretty nice. Ram Village is mostly for Juniors and Seniors. They are apartment-style dorms, thus much better than the other dorms, but the farthest from the main campus. South dorms are recommended if you go to Kenan-Flagler. If you live in Ram Village, it is less than 5 minutes walking distance to Kenan-Flagler.

what dorms do they typically give junior transfers, and do sophomore transfers get a different set of options

I don't know if transfers get preferential housing or not, but I am pretty sure you get preference over incoming freshman.

Residence Hall Style Accommodation (Transfer students can be assigned to either Hinton James, Craige, or Ehringhaus residence halls)

Apartment Style Accommodation (Transfer students can be assigned to either Ram or Odum Village. Junior transfers receive a priority for Ram Village as space is available)

Old East is on North Campus.

If you want to live on campus but have some freedom in terms of drinking, you'll want to look at Odom Village/the Apartments. They're definitely a little farther from campus, but there you go.

If I were a junior transfer, knowing what I do now about Carolina, if I DID live on campus I'd either want to live there or on North. But really, most of campus is freshmen and sophomores, and some juniors sprinkled in. You should call housing and talk to them! I bet they'd offer some good suggestions, like where most rising juniors are expecting to live. They may not know that yet but it's worth a try.

Old East and Old West are absolutely the bomb.

If your coming from a CC lacking the college experience, where do u recommend a junior transfer looking for that first year experience but does not want hall style or a huge party scene for there dorm. (Is what I'm even asking, possible)

Sounds like maybe Craige North, Hardin, or one of the Middle Campus dorms... Maybe.

Granville is pretty good for most people, and has great food. For people like gator though I wouldn't recommend it, big party scene there.

So the best dorms to try and get as a freshie (best as in experience, also in facility) are Hinton james, Ehringhaus, Craig?

I would NOT live in granville as a junior.

Well, TTWhite, I looked at those dorms, but my first choice is Morrisson.

Great experience, high rise, suite style, coed, standard visiting hours, and CENTRAL AIR!

Haha

i would be a transfer student. are the lower/upper quad communities very hard to get into? they seem like the nicest to me :)

Oops, just noticed a typo. I meant “Morrison”

What do you mean freedom in terms of drinking? is odum high on partying?

Stay on North Campus, no Granville, no huge freshman dorms.

Looking for advice on which meal plan to buy for incoming freshman in fall of 2011 at Granville?

I’m a sophomore transfer and have to problem living with all freshman. I don’t know anyone at Carolina and am not sure whether or not I want to rush a sorority. Any suggestions on which housing would be best?
