Best Dorms

I have a feeling I'll have some kind of input on where I stay at. I want a quieter dorm with larger rooms, and preferably a nice lobby and kitchen area. Between Morrison, Teague, and Craige North, which dorm would be the best?

Are you an incoming freshman? Unless you are lucky or have a medical condition, you will have almost no say on where you will live. Also, I’m not sure that a dorm like you want exists on mid or south campus. I personally think that Morrison is the best freshman dorm. The noise level depends on your suitemates generally, but the dorm itself is very nice. Craige North has bigger rooms but the kitchens are smaller and the lounge areas aren’t as nice. Teague is old and while the rooms are big, the bathrooms are kind of gross and the kitchens are very small.

I thought I might have preference because I was awarded a full-tuition scholarship… I really hope I have at least some say, no matter how small. Thanks for the response!

Nope, you don’t. I know a few who got lucky but the majority that I know of ended up in ehaus. It doesn’t give you any type of priority for housing or classes or anything like that.

Actually there are a ton of scholarship kids in Cobb, but that’s because of honors not because of the scholarships.

I’m assuming if I get into an LLC, I’ll get preference for that house, though, right?

Yes, if you get into an LLC you are guaranteed a room in that dorm because they have sections reserved for the LLC.

Hm, when I was an incoming freshman Carolina Scholar I called housing and asked if I could be put in Kenan… and then I was. I think if you call housing and ask nicely they’ll do a lot for you. Even if you’re placed somewhere you don’t like.

btw, Kenan was perfect.

Did you call before or after your housing application was sent in?

And thank you, that gives me some hope. I didn’t mean to imply that I think I deserve preference. It would just be nice to get my choice of dorm.

Don’t worry about it! Housing at Carolina is not ideal. Nothing wrong with trying to get off South Campus. (of course, some people loooooved South. I never lived there!)

I called right before I submitted my application and was told that most people submitting honors applications would be placed in Cobb. I didn’t really want Cobb, I wanted Kenan. So I asked if I could be in Kenan. They basically said not really. But, I figured Cobb was better than the alternative down in South.

After I submitted I called again a few days later and asked again if I could be put in Kenan. Mind you, I am never rude or demanding on the phone! I told them what I had been told but explained that I really wanted to be there. I can’t remember what they said.

Anyway, then I was put in Kenan. Some of my friends there who were not in honors had originally been placed in South, but called and were able to move. Of course, that was now about five years ago so it’s hard to say if things have changed. I would still try it.

One thing I’d say if the calling doesn’t work, I’d strongly advise freshmen to consider a LLC in a great dorm and then elect to stay in the building sophomore year.

From my experience, more of my class have chosen to keep using campus housing, so it’s been difficult to get into a great dorm. Pretty much all of the sophomores who were trying to move up to North campus last year ended up in Midcampus (Carmichael specifically) or a nice-r south campus dorm (Horton, etc.). It was much tougher to get on North Campus than I originally anticipated, and I think it’d be better to just wait it out in a great LLC dorm for the first two years until you have upperclassman standing.

Edit: I should say that as a rising junior, I still got a crappy registration time and I’m really lucky my roommate secured us a place
