Best Dorms

What are the best dorms at Northwestern? and if u have some financial aid does that hurt ur chances for a certain dorm? i want the best single room suite but i know im gonna be on aid....

Deferred, for freshman year, I recommend a double. You will have more interaction with people your age than if you have a single. If you do get a single, make sure it's in a suite with other freshmen. I also recommend the residential colleges that tend to house a lot of freshmen.

I think I'm going to try and get into Ayers since I'm going to be in Economics/International Studies. When I stayed overnight at Northwestern in October I stayed at Shepherd (sp?) and it was a fairly nice dorm. It was a Sunday night so I didn't get a good impression of anything social wise.

Someone told me that Willard is a good one. Anyone know about it?

I would disagree; single is the way to go. Live in the Foster-Walker Complex. You'll meet tons of fellow freshmen, despite what some think.

primab - I live in Willard this year, and I really like it. I think it is by far the best dorm for me, but I can see how it would not be suited to everyone. It is the largest (and arguably, the most popular) res college on campus. The rooms are some of the largest on campus, and it has its own dining hall in the basement. However, I wouldn't recommend it if you are going to be in Tech a lot (if you are an engineer, for example) because it is nearly a mile walk. Being very near downtown Evanston is a major plus, especially if you want to go out to eat. However, Willard people are rather...different...from other people on campus, and it is very easy to get sucked into the "Woo Shack" and never meet anyone else. That said, I would absolutely recommend a res college for freshmen, but if you aren't really feeling that, I would say that Allison is the best dorm down south, and Elder is the best up north (if you want a freshmen-only dorm).

A word of advice to you all: unless you want to be in a small house (ie - Rogers, Lindgren, Hobart) DO NOT put them anywhere in your top 5, because you will end up there (I have also heard the same thing about Foster-Walker, commonly known as "The Plex")

Don't go bashing The Plex; freshmen there love it!

Hi glamourbaby--thanks for the info. I will be a theater major so no engineering for me. Though I've been to NU twice, I am not at all familiar with the dorms but plan on learning as much as possible. Which one is the dorm that has a lot of the perf. arts people in it? My friend in Willard said not to go there unless I want to hear the finale of Grease every night. LOL I think that sounds kind of fun,,,,but he really recommends Willard.

Primab,

Jones is the performing arts residential college.

Sorry about the dead link.

what would be the most decent dorm for a WCAS student? which means, it has to be relatively near the college of arts and sciences

what about a Mccormick student?

I live in Bobb this year. Its an awesome dorm, tons of fun. There is usually always a party going on somewhere or nearby at least. Its as close to a big school college experience as you will find. Studying can be a challenge because people are usually playing cricket or golf in the hallway, but its worth it if thats your kinda thing.
