I am going to be a 1st year engineering student. Throughout the CC posts, I've learned that the best dorm location is probably the "Hill". What are the + and - of each of the Hill dorms...do any have provate bathrooms? Help please!!

They're all the same. Markley is probably the most social, if only because people have no choice once they're packed in there like sardines.

Personally, I think you were lied to. Central is better than hill, even for Engineers.

see my previous thread about this subject- tell me about central- what is your recommendation for best to worst dorm in central neighborhood- and reasons + and -; thanks a lot...

Not that it really matters, because you don't get to choose, but each dorm has its own character. Markley is over 1000 students - as a result, most people find it to be a great place to meet and socialize; not so good for sleeping and studying. Stockwell is all women and, therefore, probably lowest on the party scale; it's also one of the more attractive dorms and has lots of singles. Alice Lloyd has a reputation for being dominated by New Yorkers; has the largest rooms. Most kids manage to have a good experience no matter where they end up. If you are female and not opposed to an all-female hall, these are all located on Central or the Hill.

why is central better than hill? I know we only can say 1 st choice= hill/central, 2nd choice= north...but i am just interested since reading the online info of each dorm.

location...location...location

Take a look at the campus map. The Hills are in the middle of nowhere...the only place close by is the med center. The shops, restaurants and other intersting stuffs are on State and South U. West/South/East Quads are also closer to classes and the libraries. The rooms on the Hills seem to be a bit smaller too...not sure about that. Someone on the forum did say that the parties are better on the Hills.

It has everything to do with where they are. The Hill dorms are a good 15-20 minute walk to most classes. But, unless you're an athlete, in Honors or Residential College, or specify an all-female hall, it's fairly rare for freshmen to be assigned to Central Campus dorms.

Note the largest (hence most likely assignment?) all-female dorm is Stockwell, which is the closest to central campus of the hill dorms.

On the plus side:
-clustered together plus mostly freshmen likely gives rise to reputation (deserved?) for better social life
-more convenient to CCRC, arb, Palmer Field
-will be more convenient to new Life Science center (aren't they building a 2nd pedestrian bridge across Washtenaw?)

I live at South Quad presently, and let me tell you that if you're an LSA student you want to live at South Quad and nowhere else, trust me. South Quad is conveniently located near all the academic buildings, it's right next to the michigan union (michigan book and supply, food court, ups, etc), it definitely has the best food, it has larger rooms than markley, it's cleaner, has a 9th floor computing site/study lounge, and the list goes on... My friends at Markley don't particularly like it (LSA students) because they have long walks to classes and frankly the facility just isn't that nice. The food at times can be AWFUL (I've eaten there several times) and the elevators look like death machines. However first year students don't really have a choice because of the lottery system, so just hope you get into south quad or possibly west quad (honors housing is in south quad, which is guaranteed if u sign up for it). East quad is by far the worst dorm at the U of M, it's full of druggies and the rooms are like prison cells, not to mention the food is downright disgusting.

If ur an engineering student, I can't offer much advice other than you'll probably want to live at Bursley, but if you have lots of friends in the LSA college you should probably try to get into Markley.

call,

not to be contentious, but how can the food in one dorm be that much worse (or better) than another? It's all the same dining service, presumably purchasing the same raw materials in bulk and distributing to all the dining halls. Many universities have contracted out to e.g. Sodexho, but I don't see any evidence of that at UM.

I live in ann arbor, and the closer to hill st. the better the party scene...hill is where are the frats are...

Safiamike,
Hill Street is south of Central Campus, near West/South/East Quads. The Hill Area is at the northeast corner of Central Campus, near the medical center area. You are right about the party scene. However, I heard that it is not bad in Markley too.

obviously I am not to familiar with the actual dorms...haha

Alice Lloyd has rooms that are probably the size of your bedroom at home (no joke)
