west quad or markley?

im gonna be a freshman in september and my soon to be roommate says he found an opening to switch from markley to west quad. west quad seems nicer, but markley seems for "frosh friendly", since i heard its reputed to be the freshman party dorm. which is the better choice?

Oh shoot, that’s a difficult decision. Markley is a party dorm but don’t get me wrong, there’s partying over in West Quadrangle too, especially because most athletes live there as well. There will be more freshman in Markley but it is farther from Central and the rooms are more “cramped.” I’d probably choose West Quadrangle. The environment there also feels cleaner and closer to everything that goes on.

So you have a double? I am going to be in West Quad in a quad with at least two other freshman. we are not sure about the other guy. I am kinda worried about being the only freshmen there.

You will not be the only freshmen there.

I’m bias but I would absolutely choose west quad over markley. they party just as much but don’t get caught because they don’t have that rep. and it’s so close to everything.

MARKLEY. Don’t make that mistake.

are you saying don’t make the mistake of going to Markley. Or are you saying don’t make the mistake of not going to Markley?

Don’t make the mistake of not living to Markley. Significantly more fun. The walk to Central is not a big deal. You were lucky enough to be placed there, don’t shoot yourself in the foot.

Well i am an engineering freshman so i did not even think twice about not accepting west quad. I figured that anywhere on central> north

definitely choose west quad. you would be stupid not to.

Markley is significantly more social/fun than West Quad.

Doesn’t matter if you’re in engineering – you still want to live on Central/The Hill. It’s better to take the bus during the day than have to rush to grab it at night.

giants can you elaborate why markley is more social/fun?

You won’t go wrong either way.

I think people need to define what the “fun” is in Markley. For some Markley would not necessarily be substantially more fun than west quad.

It’s all freshmen – you don’t risk the chance of being stuck in a house w/ boring sophomores who decided to live in the dorms for a second year (don’t mean to stereotype, but that was my experience living in WQ freshman year). If you want the best social/fun/partying experience, you would be a fool not to choose Markley. It’s a s***show on the weekends. The lobby/halls are just hysterical from ~1:30 - 3:00 am. I wish I had gotten Markley/had the opportunity to switch. I had fun living in WQ, but I was definitely jealous of my friends who lived in Markley – whenever I went there to pregame or went back there at the end of a night I would see how much better it was.

As an RA myself, I would recommend West Quad. If you wanna party, go to the frats. Or else your RA’s will bust you in the dorms. And even if they don’t, people always party and it doesn’t matter what dorm it is.

^It’s not about parties thrown in Markley – that’s never a fantastic idea. It’s the people you meet/pregame with/go on to parties with. Better crowd.

^ that is so subjective. You’ll find people to hang out with at any dorm.

^Of course you will find people with which to hang out in any dorm. That’s not an earth-shattering statement. It’s really not debatable putting Markley ahead of West Quad as far as social scene goes.

It is debatable. Not everyone is a “party animal” and likes to pre-game with drunk freshmen. YOUR idea of fun is NOT everyone else’s idea of fun. The social scene can involve just hanging out with friends and going to campus events, concerts, eating out, going to the gym together, etc. And for that, you’ll find people anywhere on campus. And even if you’re in Markley and your friends are in WQ, you can always meet up with them.

And FYI, I’ve lived in Oxford, Mo-Jo and Markley, and have friends in Couzens, Lloyd, Stockwell, EQ, and SQ. I don’t know why being in Markley is such a big deal.
