I already applied to my colleges, but I'm just curious.

Okay, I know this is all very subjective. But let's say you're a person living in the Northeast ... A lot of the CC threads about Journalism schools have to do with Northwestern/ASU/UWash and other such schools that are very very far away from where I live. So, which schools are most well-known for their journalism programs in the NorthEast (MA, NY, RI, CT, NH, ME)?

So, fellow CC-ers. What's the buzz about the strongest undergraduate colleges for those looking for a career in journalism in the NE?

(BTW, I'm interested in Print/Broadcast Journalism)

Yale and Columbia do not have a journalism major (Columbia does for grad. school though) but both are still known for producing journalists b/c of their strong english depts (which offer journalism courses) and student newspapers. Other schools such as NYU , Maryland, and Syracuse as others said are also great. I've heard good things about Boston College, as well from a family friend who majors in journalism or communications there.

"Best journalism schools" is quite different from "strongest undergraduate colleges for those looking for a career in journalism"

Given the states you listed, I'd say the answer to the latter phraseology of the question would be Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Smith, Williams, Wesleyan, Wellesley, Vassar, and Yale.

My point is the top LACs and major universities do a great job in preparing people for a career in journalism. In fact several LACs are particularly well-known for producing lots of journalists (Haverford and Oberlin, come to mind). But, I'm guessing you were asking a different question.

I agree with pointoforder. A LAC is a great place to train to become a journalist. Many of them have radio stations and school papers that one can easily get involved with as a first-year students. Majoring in e.g. English, being a committed student journalist and doing a high profile media internship should provide thorough preparation for becoming a journalist.

GrayAreaGirl,
I am going to give you the secret gem of journalism/communications....Quinnipiac. They are really stepping their communications program up.

Syracuse has the best journalism school in the northeast, and one of the best in the country. Top 3, along with Mizzou and Northwestern. Probably the best broadcast journalism program in the country as well.

I know this isn't Northeast but Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism is one of the best. So is University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill.

Boston University ....i read somewhere on the BU forum that the School of Communicationas is pretty well known

also look for colleges close to or right in the middle of big cities (ex. American U in DC); while the journalism program may not be the top or the highest ranked, schools in urban areas imho do have easy access to internships/job opportunities to large newspapers/broadcast stations.

so i'd consider looking into schools in the boston area, nyc, and washington dc.

i also want to major in journalism too! so PM me if you have any q's (i may not be able to answer all of them...but i'll be glad to help!)

Thanks so much guys! I ended up applying to:

NYU
Fordham
BU
BC
Tufts
Columbia
Dartmouth
Harvard

I just wanted some last-minute assurance about where I applied. But all the schools you guys posted kind of makes me wish I had expanded my views a bit, haha.
