Best major for someone who wants to do marketing?

I am interested in marketing, but I have noticed that many colleges do not have a marketing major (or any undergraduate business majors). Is it possible to major in something non-business (like political science, communications, economics), get an MBA in marketing after college, and then work in marketing?

  1. Many colleges do offer undergraduate business majors – you need to seek them out if that is what you want to study. 2) You can get a MBA with any undergraduate major.

Lots and lots of schools do have a School of Business, with majors ranging from marketing to business management to finance.

If it’s what you want to do, find a school that offers it. I would think that offering your major, along with admissions odds and price, would be the first 3 things you consider in a college.

Currently, 'marketing ’ as an undergraduate major has a low ROI. You need a strong command of statistics, data analytics, etc. You CAN major in a college of communication and add a minor in either stats or Business analytics.
Legit MBA 's require 2-3 years of professional experience before you enroll, so you’d attend college and have internships in a variety of fields, then work, then apply directly an MBA.

Schools like UT Austin and UVA have 1 year master of marketing programs.

  1. If you want a marketing program, you should make sure to only apply to schools that have a school of business - so no LACs.
  2. Listen to the advice in post#3 though. With marketing, it would be better to minor in stat or data analytics, or even double major if possible.

Having other skills like writing and public speaking can help you as a marketing major. You could maybe minor in communications or English to strengthen these skills and beef up your resume.

It is only some Top 15 universities and LAC’s that do not offer undergraduate business.

I own four small businesses with about a hundred employees. If you ever want to own a business or be an executive, you will be better at the job with an Accounting degree. You will be a better budgeter, manager, and more profitable if you can master your financials. Leave the bookkeeping to someone else, but having command of your numbers will make you successful. If I’m looking at a dozen resumes, an accounting degree stands out above a general business degree because I can see the candidate has displayed some vital business discipline. Of course, I have to interview him/her to make sure she can speak with humans and interact successfully. My ideal hire out of college is someone with an accounting degree who was in a fraternity or sorority. That gives me good initial insight into their skill set.

I worked for a digital marketing company and they’ve hired, communication/journalist/broadcasting/marketing majors all the time.

you want to gauge on something that can create/learn to create content. a minor in business would help, but i think you would be better off in communications or changing universities to get an actual undergraduate marketing degree.
