Which one? From what I hear, the two top ones are verizon and cingular.

Depends where your campus is....some carriers don't get good signal on some campuses, but work great on others. I'll vote for Verizon though...never had problems with them!

when in socal:
do NOT get cingular.
that is all i have to say.

course, cards4life is completely right. depends on your particular campus, even your dorm's location and building materials.
here... cingular sucks if you have anything less than quad-band. even though they claim it shouldn't make a difference...

Cingular works best for me here in Central Florida.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET NEXTEL! Not only do you get terrible service, but that beep beep thing drives you up the wall!!!

t-mobile has the most amazing customer service and good reception as long as there's a cell tower somewhere in hte area. i just like t-mobile i guess.

I almost never have problems with Cingular/AT&T and having the roll over option with the minutes is an absolute godsend.

Speaking from Gainesville, FL; cingular sucks. Sprint isn't that good here either. The best here are Verizon and T-mobile. So it depends on the location of your campus.

Verizon all the way.

Do you ever roam on the plaza of americas with your service?

It varies depending on where you are, obviously. My vote goes for cingular or verizon, but cingular edges verizon out bc V phones are so crippled.

I had Verizon for some time, but then the quality seemed to go down. I wasn't getting much service in my hometown (major city), and my college town (decent sized city). I'm not a fan of Verizon. I'm now using T-mobile and couldn't be happier; I'm paying less and getting a better signal. Throw in a BlackBerry (crackberry) and you can't go wrong.

I used to love AT&T. Then they became Cingular and I hated them. So I switched to Verizon -- and two months later Cingular became AT&T again.

Both services worked pretty normally for me in SoCal and in NorCal; the only difference was which spots one worked and the other didn't.

I'd say it's all a matter of service perqs (ie, rollover or texting or price per month) and personal preference on phones on the network as long as you're near a high coverage area.

Also, overseas phones can't be used with Verizon.

I have Sprint, at plaza, I actually get a pretty good signal, never roams. But other spots on campus (like around Reitz), I do. The best signal I get is when I am by NEB. Which is good, because I am always there. :)

I dont get service anywhere with Cingular in DC. I've had network rejects, 4 bars and the phone telling me service is unavailable, and missed calls not show up. Verison is best for DC.

I'm happy with Verizon. I get service at home and school, and everywhere I go over the summer (including some very small towns) I seem to have service as well. I might switch to singular to get an iPhone in a year (or longer) though.

I will never use T-mobile, unless I have to. They sponsored Lance Armstrong's main rival =P

Does anyone has any suggestion for use in lafayette?
I'm going to purdue in fall and i'm not sure which service to go for

We have had the same service provider for 20 years. It was a local provider, then CellularOne, then AT&T, then Cingular, now AT&T again. We went with a family plan when it was ATT. With 4 phones on the family plan, and rollover minutes, we have always come out ahead money wise comparing to other families. We travel and have had service almost everywhere. Once there was an upgrade and we did have problems with one of the older phones with signal. But that was the phone not the signal.

During that time, one of us needed a second work phone. That was first with sprint, then t-mobile. Whenever possible, we would use the Cingular/AT&T phone for a variety of reasons.

I did not care for the change in texting going from ATT to Cingular, when incoming texts went from free to being counted, and when unlimited texting was no longer avail. I nearly switched plans. But I stuck it out buy turning off D2's texting! I am irritated, though, by their new ad campaign for unlimited texting for $5. That is ON TOP of first buying a text plan for minimum $14.95 AND it is unlimited only to other ATT phones. D1 knows EXACTLY who is on ATT. D2 doesn't have a clue. So still no texting for her.

wat about the prepay plans?
is it worth it?

I hated my T-mobile when I'm at my house. Just my block specificlly did not have any signal. and the operator I called had the nerve to tell me whenever I want to make a call from home I should walk a block or two to get signal.

Before T-mobile I never had any problem with Verizon, worked great everywhere.

so go to the carrier's site and check for specific addresses, like your house or campus.
