I've always enjoyed live music and moving to Manhattan presents some extraordinary opportunities. In recent years I've visited New York City a few times to see concerts. But, I've never really gotten a hang on to which venues are recognized as regularly showcasing new talents.

I've visited a handful of cool places. A few trips to Piano's, Arlene's Grocery, and the Village Vanguard have made these memorable places.

Can you recommend some other cool venues? Are there any in the vicinity of Morningside Heights?

The best ones are in the village

If you’re looking for electronica, hip-hop, or pretty much anything other than music hipsters would love, the best ones are not in the village.

Where can I hear solid electronica acts? I’ve heard the name The Terminal a few times. Is that more of a nightclub than venue?

I like indie rock as much as the next guy. I’m also very much into jazz, electronic music of all sorts, and some hip-hop. Then again, I’m probably most interested in hearing about things and venues that I haven’t tried before.

You can sweat out about 2 pounds on a reggae night at Le Poisson Rouge in Brooklyn. Maybe it’s because it was my first outing there, but I love it.

Guys lets not leave oiut Union Square or Times Square. It’s always a bazaar in Union Square.

are there any techno lounges, house etc? im sure i can find a great jazz venue since we are so close to the M. School of music. Asian styled music > china town and little tokyo :D

Terminal 5, Bowery Ballroom…those 2 come to mind.

As far as “techno lounges”, there are tons and tons of clubs in the city. Most of them will have 1 night dedicated to only playing house or whatnot…
