Is it easier to find work on campus if awarded work/study, or is it easier to find work in the Northampton businesses?

My daughter had no trouble finding work-study employment.

She didn’t attempt to find work in Northampton.

If you have work-study, finding on campus jobs is very easy. Just keep in mind that as a first year, you’re restricted with work study to working in the dining halls or working with the tutoring program that Smith runs with local schools. I know some first years do branch out beyond that, but the only garaunteed job you will get is one of those two.

If you do NOT receive work-study, you are not restricted in what kind of job you get. But you can’t apply for an on campus job until after October 1st during fall semester and not until the second week of spring semester. And some jobs, like working in the library, will just be closed to you entirely. Also, work study students get priority over you. Still, I had a job every semester I was at Smith without being on work study, so it’s definitely do-able.

It’s definitely much easier to work on campus than in town regardless. Most of the businesses in town only want people who are going to be available during the Christmas holidays (their busiest season), so they won’t hire you if you plan to go home for Christmas break. Also, they aren’t as likely to want to work around your other holiday schedules or your classes. I’ve worked both in town and on campus and the on campus jobs were definitely much much better and easier.

The best on campus job I ever had was working at the boathouse. You work in five hour shifts, so you make a good chunk of money. And all you have to do is sit out and enjoy the fine weather and help people check out the kayaks and canoes.

Great info, thanks a bunch! And Smithie, the boathouse job sounds great!

Adding onto the questions - apparently I’ve been nominated by one of my professors to be a writing tutor next year. It sounds like a good low-stress on-campus job I’d enjoy, so I guess my question is whether anyone has any additional info about a tutoring job verses other on-campus ones.

Congrats, teenage_cliche! Hope you get the job!

teenage_cliche, I have a tutoring job on campus (not writing though) and it is great. The hours are pretty decent and a lot of the time I end up doing my own homework because no one is at the drop in hours. As a tutor, you also get paid at the higher rate ($0.25 above base).
