My kid will be in Ithaca in the fall and our phone contract is about to expire. Should we stick with Verizon, or does something else work better?

The consensus seems to be that Verizon works well both on-campus and around Ithaca. AT&T comes close but reception is a little spottier at seemingly random locations (for instance, I don’t get much reception at the local Target).

As said above, pretty much everyone agrees Verizon is best. I think AT&T just put up a tower on campus though so my guess is at this point they are pretty comparable. Any other carrier will leave you disappointed though.

Thank you for your responses. We are Verizon people, so I’m happy that will work. I appreciate your time.

My AT&T contract is expiring this summer, still thinking whether we should switch to Verizon.

I’ve been at the Ithaca campus with a friend. ATT & Verizon work just about exactly the same in terms of signal. Most other carriers operate off of either verizon or att towers so their signal should be similar. stay with the one that is cheaper for you. It is amazing that we are are thinking about stuff like cell phones and clothing when we are almost a year away from going! See ya in September…

Yes, my kid (youngest) is at boarding school and I’m shopping winter sales…sad, but true. Also, our phone contract ends in February…

I can tell you my kid isn’t thinking about any of this…just Mom.

We have had some problems with Sprint - D lives in Bauer Hall on North Campus and is always roaming from her room when she calls home. We had Sprint for several years prior to D going to school here, and before renewing the contract, we were assured that coverage in Ithaca was excellent. If you look at Sprint’s map, it is, everywhere but North Campus. I ended up changing her plan to the 69.95 unlimited, but that allows only 800 minutes of roam and between home and D calling her boyfriend, those get used up quickly. In November, I got a letter from Sprint saying that she was exceeding her 800 minutes (which we were not told about when we changed the plan, thought unlimited was unlimited, silly us…) I called Sprint and explained that expecting a young lady to roam around a college campus at night looking for signal was not a good idea, it is now January, have yet to hear back from them.

In short, what I am saying, is if you have good luck with Verizon , stick with it.

If anyone else has similar experiences with Sprint, let me know how you resolved the matter.

Wow, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as roaming any longer.

AT&T blows everywhere. It’s overpriced and it has crap reception.

@usfa2011dad - Sprint advertises the 69.95 plan as unlimited, which I define as unlimited everything. Their pricing is great if only the unlimited part is true!

Didn’t mean to steal this thread, just sharing my experience with Sprint!

Congrats to swimmer 726, Cornell is awesome!

Verizon works well on-campus and around Ithaca.

Thanks momofswimmer! We are all so excited. It will be a different experience than what he would have down here in Virginia, but he knew it was for him the first time we went! Thanks to all of you for the phone info. Right now, he’s at a boarding school that doesn’t have great coverage, so we’re sensitive to that being a problem…

Verizon is generally okay everywhere. T-Mobile works on campus and in Collegetown. Not sure about Sprint but my friends who had Sprint freshman year were always roaming on the Verizon network. Keep in mind this was two years ago so it may have changed now. AT&T generally works everywhere now as well (one of my close friends has an iPhone and I’ve always been able to get in touch with him on North, West, or Ctown)
