What is the best cell phone company at Cornell, especially in the dorms?

Verizon! is the answer.

Is Cingular good?

Cingular isn't bad, Verizon has towers on the campus though... Basically, Verizon is always going to have solid reception... Cingular can get a little sketchy in places, but it isn't too bad if that's what you really want (I know you want a Razr phone :p ), so if want it, you should be fine with Cingular.

I KNOW i am ****ed, i wanted the razor, but now i can't...

blackferrari, ru a student at Cornell, b/c ur posts confuse me, u talk like your a student and sometimes like an upcoming freshman, and then sometimes like a future applicant. Please clarify.

lol, yeah... You'll be there for four years though, so you I'm sure Verizon will come out with a sweet phone by the time you graduate.

don't get cingular. i had cingular and it only worked in certain parts of north campus. i lived in low rise 7 freshman year and i only got reception when i was in a specific part of the room with the phone tilted a certain way. also, verizon is the only service that works in certain buildings like Clark and Baker Halls.

No, sorry... I live in the area, so I am very familiar with the campus/surrounding areas. I am applying for class of 2010. Sorry for the confusion collegekid. The reason I know of the different cell phone services is because when my friends and I went up to Cornell about a week ago, I had excellent service everywhere (Verizon), and my girlfriend (Cingular) only had decent reception in certain areas. She could make calls but she was constantly battling the interference.

does everybody buy new cell phones in ithaca or how does it work to get to verizon?? i have rogers, and so if i can just switch to verizon, keep the phone, but not get charged for long distance that would be perfect....or does every1 just buy new phones down tehre??

Well, there are a bunch of phones which you can get for free (after mail-in rebates and such) with a Verizon plan. But if you bring your phone with you when you go to purchase the plan, they will be able to tell you whether or not you can use the phone with Verizon. It is possible that it won't be compatable with Verizon, but I guess that depends on the phone... Just bring it with you and they will tell you if you can use it with their service.

and all calls in ithaca will be like local, or will they be charged as if i was here in southern ontario?

if you purchase the phone plan in Ithaca you're phone number will be an Ithaca number, so the calls would be local. I'm not sure how this works once you get into Canada, but for some Verizon plans, you don't get charged for long distance, I'm not sure if it's different regarding international calls as I haven't made any on my phone.

Does anyone else know the answer to this??

I DO!
If you purchase a plan at home thats the best answer. You'll get a nationwide plan. No long distance, because everyone is in your calling area. All the students at cornell will have different area codes, so an ithaca area code won't be saving you or anybody else money. A home area code means people at home can call you without long distance charges of calling to ithaca.

what is your phone company? I can tell you if your phone will be compatible with verizon if it's a national company. When you sign a 1 year contract with verizon, you can get a good quality decent phone for free, or a really nice, small one for just 30 dollars or so if you buy online. also, your number is transferrable from your old phone to your new one.

Get Verizon. It's not like a pepsi vs. coke or ford vs. chevrolet kind of argument. A while on campus and you will see that it is no contest. It works everywhere...and by that I mean everywhere: north, central, west, buildings, basements, even in the gorges. And, yes, I am a current student.
