URGH I’m sharing a storage unit with this guy and he had the MOST DISGUSTING mattress I had ever seen. I don’t know why he wanted to store it but I swear homeless people sleep on better mattresses than that =_=. I agree with her statement, I rather sleep on the floor than such a disgusting mattress after that experience.

Given what goes on in a typical dorm throwing it in a mix of OJ and hair bleach would probably be beneficial. I am only half-kidding, citric acid + peroxide makes for a pretty aggressive disinfectant.

Not to beat a dead horse too much, but if done due to lack of means you have to respect it. Some years ago I used to live with my family (3 persons) in a major US city on $600/month — TOTAL. We bought our mattress used at a Salvation Army store for $60 and slept on it for 5 years. When I finally got a better paying job and it was time for us to move it was kind of embarrassing to even throw the thing away… it was in such poor shape. We left it by the dumpster but someone picked it up within 15 minutes. When means are limited you focus on the important things. A stained mattress can be “fixed” with a set of clean sheets that is washed regularly. And if you try sleeping on the floor for a few weeks in a row you might reconsider the last statement above :D

I know this thread is a bit old but I had the same question when moving up to LA this summer. I ended up ordering a mattres from socalstudentmattress.com. They offer free delivery to LA and I got the mattress delivered within 3 days. My mattress cost $350 for a brand new queen sized pillow top. I saw that they had mattresses starting for as little as $190. The only downside was that they don’t have a physical showroom to check out the mattress beforehand, but I was more than pleased when the mattress was delivered!

There are companies that deliver refurbished mattresses with boxsprings for about $200. You can find them on Craigslist. I did that my junior year and it was fine.

For the record I have never personally seen or experienced a bedbug at USC, in L.A., or for that matter, anywhere in this hemisphere.

P.S. there’s a difference between being ‘into’ used items and not being wealthy. Perhaps college has opened that kid’s eyes a bit. Then again, perhaps not.
