Hello, I am incoming freshman who is worried about finding a job. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a place that typically hires students without a work-study requirement or a lot of experience.
It’s not flashy and some people don’t want to do it but U of M dining always is hiring and they work around your class schedule. You can also work as little as 8 hours or more if you want.
You should check out their website.
@billcsho Which website?
The best jobs are those that you can study during down times…like at the front desks in dorms…community centers…libraries etc…Kill two birds with one stone!!!
^^^ I agree. RA is a good one too.
Thanks everybody for the suggestions and @billcsho I have checked out the website but most of the jobs listed are the ones without the benefit of studying during down times. I noticed that for library jobs, one must go directly to the library webpage and apply. Does the same hold true for other jobs like @UofMDAD suggested and, if so, does anyone know the website(s)?
best jobs are those in some way related to your career goals. Starting out, those opportunities are limited - UROP, or clerk at some department, or ITCS. This could conceivably get you a leg up for an RA job, as i ran into professors more at the department floor (they’d just come in at random sometimes). The downside was after i missed a class a professor stopped by to nag me where i’d been.
After that i would do as others suggest and just look for immediate gain like downtime to study. Believe it or not the cafeteria can be a good way if you sign up for breakfast shift and take turns working with someone else. Then again i find it difficult to get work done so early
Read through the job listings and find a job that fits. Most will work with your schedule. My daughter was a freshman last year. She applied, interviewed, and was offered a lab assistant job 10 hours a week. Was a very good fit for her potential major. She’s learned a lot, and has found some wonderful mentors. Also, she was invited to work there again in the fall…so it’s nice to have a job all lined up to return to.
