best private certified?

so I am very unhappy with my current university housing room assignment and want to switch to PCH instead. basically the things that matter to me are: food quality (I am an incredibly, incredibly picky eater), social life (I'm very outgoing and would like to be in an environment where I can meet people), location (I'm a freshman engineering major taking 3 classes on the engineering quad along with econ and physics, if that helps at all), comfort and spaciousness of the room, and extra amenities (like pool/fitness room), in that order.

I've emailed pretty much all of the PCH houses, and they all pretty much have openings, so now it's just up to me to decide where I want to go. I don't really care about price, I really just want to find somewhere where I can be happy.

Right now I'm looking hard at IT, hendrick, europa (although from the pictures it looked a bit outdated), and bromley (which is sadly full :( but i'm on the waiting list).

Any comments on personal experiences, friends's experiences, or general reputation relating to any of those dorms or other PCH would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

BROMLEY BROMLEY BROMLEY! I’m living there this fall and it looks amazing! There’s an indoor pool when you walk in, a beautiful lobby with pool tables, and semi-private bathrooms, which I’m sure all PCH has. The rooms are huge compared to other houses. And there’s housekeeping twice a month! You said price doesn’t matter, but the price of the triple I’m staying in is less than a double in University Housing. The ONLY bad thing that I’ve heard is the food isn’t good. . . I know that’s the first thing on your list of things to look for and you’re a picky eater, but its college dorm food; everyone gets sick of dorm food during the school year. :)

i know. bromley was definitely my top choice, but its full :frowning: i’m on the waiting list though, but i’m trying to explore my other options

Everyone I know who has lived at Bromley ended up hating it. Check out Illini Tower and Newman Hall. I would go with Newman Hall.

Everyone that I know that lived in Bromley said they absolutely loved it and recommended it.

Surprised no mention of “Presby.” Newest of the lot. Well appointed. Great loc.

GoIllini - do you know what specifically your friends didn’t like about bromley? i’ve only heard good stuff

any thoughts on armory?

I think they just mainly didn’t like the people. They hated the food too.

You said that the most important thing to you was the food, so I would definitely not recommend Bromley. Everybody there hated the food. Europa doesn’t provide food (you can still get a meal plan through the university and eat at any of the res halls), and is very small, so probably wouldn’t be the best for social life. Don’t know much about Hendrick House or Illini Tower, but Hendrick House would be an ideal location for engineering.

what’s so bad about the food at bromley? i feel like i’m always hearing that it’s awful, but i never really know what people are talking about. Is it just like boring or something? My main thing with food is that I have a queasy-ish stomach and I am not a big fan of stuff that’s super heavy or rich or greasy.

I’ve heard that you can only have like one guest in your room allowed? Not sure if thats true.

I lived in Bromley last year as a freshman. It’s okay - I didn’t mind it so much, but if I could do freshman year over, I would have lived somewhere else. I definitely loved having a semi-private bath (and a housekeeper who cleaned it every other week), and the fitness room was a nice bonus. The biggest cons about the place are that it’s not social and laundry is expensive ($1.50 per load - the washers are small and the dryers don’t dry clothes very well. It usually took two cycles through the dryer to get clothes dry). Most people keep their doors closed, at least half of the people in Bromley that I talked to regretted living there, and from my experience, the people who lived in university housing usually had a wider circle of friends.

The food is not as terrible as people make it out to be. It’s definitely not great, but it’s all right. My favorite part was the fresh fruit; in addition to the usual affair like apples, oranges and bananas, Bromley always had trays of fresh fruit like pineapples, melons, grapes and strawberries.

In sum, I guess I can’t really say a lot that was great about Bromley, but I can’t say a lot that was bad about it either. It was just okay.

anyone with any personal experience with Illini tower? it looks clean and pretty spacious from the pictures on the website, but how’s the social life?

leaping; where’d you get placed? there is always a chance of moving to your first choice a couple weeks into school or even next semester. i know a couple friends that moved from isr to six pack, etc.

i was assigned to busey, which is definitely not my style. i requested to switch to the 6 pack, but from what i’ve heard idk if i would really like it there either. im an engineer in the campus honors program so i really do need to focus on my grades and ive heard the 6 pack is too much of a constant party to get any work done. that’s why i’m leaning more towards PCH.

6 pack is pretty lively I’d say. People don’t really study in their rooms there though, so you can live there and still do fine in school. If you live in a dorm that is quieter, or has bigger rooms, you can study in your room. In the 6 pack, most people go to the libraries to study. It’s not really a big deal. Probably more productive than studying in your room anyways

after looking at the options for PCH, the thought of being in a tiny grimy room in the 6 pack is looking dimmer and dimmer, especially since i’d like to be able to study in my room. looks like im probably gonna switch to Illini tower. this girl put youtube videos up and it looks really nice: [YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.](http://www.youtube.com/playlist?p=PL9A61CB6BC35048B8)

I would avoid IT. I decided to eat there with my friend because I was tired of ISR food, but the quality and variety of food there was worse than ISR.The social life there is terrible, my friend doesn’t really know anyone except for his suitemates. Also, IT has terrible reviews, only 38% of people recommend living there.

I would also avoid Hendrick, although the food is supposed to be good, the social life isn’t so great there.

so if you were in my shoes would you just stay in busey-evans and hope to either get switched to the 6-pack or that i get off the wait list and into bromley?
