bands, groups, singers, etc

Depends what you like! I’ve been getting into Songza. There are some great playlists up.

I’m an avid listener of studymusicproject on YouTube

There is no good study music if you want to learn the material efficiently. Marty Lobdell is a psychologist and he did a youtube video on smart study habits and he said somewhere in that video that any media source (T.V. music or web) would make it take 2-3 times as long to accomplish the same level of retention as when you are not using other media sources. His big advice was do thirty minutes of work and ten minutes of relaxation in between. There you could listen to music or watch T.V. or check Facebook.

for real? I’ve always thought that certain instrumentals have really helped me concentrate haha! That makes sense though! I’ll definitely check it out!

A lot of people do, which is why there are tons of studies on it. Almost every single time the kids who say they learn better by listening to music or watching TV (doesn’t matter if it’s classical or history channel or metallica or House) do worse when they do these activities when compared to doing the assignment by itself. It’s just concentration and not dividing your focus.

I’ve heard that one exception to the above is background instrumental as it acts like white noise, but yeah in general no music is good music when it comes to studying.

There is some research that video game music helps you to study - the music is designed to improve concentration

Seriously.

I had been trying to find instrumental music to play while I work (I’m a parent and do programming/bookkeeping for my job), but some were too fast or too slow or became too loud or too soft. Then last year or so, I saw a TED video. . which pointed me to this site. I used the free version for a few months . . then purchased a subscription. I like it and it does seem to help me get focused, and stay focused on my task when I’m at my desk and need to concentrate (I need help with staying focused - so that this works for me - it’s a wonderful thing!). And it has “channels” so it’s easy to switch it to a faster or slower tempo, depending on my mood and the task.

@jimmyboy23: I think you’re rather quick in your dismissal of what seems, from even my quick searches on the subject, to be a contentious issue. Music - especially of the calming, instrumental variety - has been found to positively affect concentration and attention in numerous studies (Shih and Huang 2011, Hallam et al 2002, to name a few. For some older citations, see Kiger 1989). You might also note that while music with lyrics is found to have a negative effect in general, that hardly means that it has a negative effect for any particular individual. Additionally, in these studies, students are typically given music chosen my the experimenters, whereas in their day-to-day lives, they can choose music which is more attuned to their particular sensibilities.

Anyway, I find the Angkor Wat movements from the soundtrack to In the Mood for Love to be excellent studying music. I downloaded the songs in the spring of my sophomore year; by the time I graduated, I had listened to them 1141 times! You can hear one of the pieces at the link below.

For a less “classical” sound that’s still primarily instrumental, I like Sigur Ros. I actually also like to study to 90s R&B, to fast-paced “party” music (TNGHT’s Higher Ground, anyone?) and, especially, to Drake.
