Best undergraduate business schools in northeast that aren't too expensive?

Hello I’m a high school senior in NJ with a 3.46 weighted gpa and 1850 SAT. I want to pursue an undergraduate business degree but my options look rather limited considering my parents make less than <10,000 a year. Which schools are worth applying on the financially generous side that offer a good education? I am aware of cheaper in-state tuition but I’d also like to consider any out of state options in the north east. Thanks in advance

With your parents’ income and your stats, you should not be thinking about out of state. Rutgers would be your best option.

Rutgers, TCNJ are options. But state schools are not always the best option price-wise. Private schools may provide generous need-based financial aid with your income so run the net price calculators on some schools that you feel are academic fits (perhaps a school like Marist) 2) also consider other school where your stats place you in the top 25% or so of applicants and you might qualify for merit aid (perhaps a school like UScranton)

Private schools that want you, would have to give you financial aid.
But you need to apply to schools where you have above average
grades as most do factor in merit as to whether you get grants vs loans vs rejected.

SUNY and CUNY are cheap. Baruch is $6k/year if you can commute
to NYC. Albany and suny in general are relatively inexpensive
for OOS students compared to other states, but with 10k income this
may be a stretch since you would need to pay for dorms too.
Cant hurt to try suny and apply for fin aid.

In the end TCNJ, Rutgers and Rowan will be the cheapest most likely. You should get into TCNJ.

I would definitely run the financial aid calculators on Scranton, which is ranked nationally in Accounting and Finance in the top 25, St. Bonaventure, Siena College, Marist and Muhlenberg to see the results. These are all well regarded AACSB accredited programs. Bonaventure has a big presence in the big Accounting firms especially regionally.

At your familiy’s income and your stats you might find something that works.

Which SUNY’s specifically?

You could consider Iona in New Rochelle, NY.

Find out how much in grants you can qualify for from federal (Pell), and state. Then add in work earnings you can make in the summer and part time now.

This is your budget. You can also take out about $5 k in federal student loan.

Students I know who have stats to get full tuition can pay room and board with Pell and loan.

Others commute to school and the grants and loan cover tuition.

@RLveteran The Scranton financial aid calculator spits out 13k a year based on your familiy’s income. That is before loans.

I would definitely encourage you to go to Rutgers. They have very good financial aid compared to many other state schools, and you can’t beat the business school for the price. They offer some really great work-study opportunities too. That said, I am oos going to Rutgers because going to Rutgers and paying oos tuition with my scholarship was cheaper than paying full in-state tuition at my state school, proving your own state schools aren’t always the best option. Just saying, consider all your options and don’t be afraid to apply to as many places as you can, you never know what kind of offers you will get back. Also consider applying to Muhlenberg College, they have good financial aid too.

@NPK219 That might be the case at family income this low but it would not be the case for Rutgers in general. I don’t think many NJ parents would agree that Rutgers gives good financial aid or that it represents much value considering the quality of life there.

I wouldn’t really recommend Rutgers for OP. I’d definitely advocate TCNJ, Stevens, and Rowan however.

If your CR+M is 1420 or above, you will get full tuition plus $8,000 a year at Temple University. They have a bachelors in business administration.

CUNY Baruch would be a high reach. CUNY Queens would be more of a match. They’re actually $12,000 out-of-state, but that’s about the same as most of our in-state schools, so I’d recommend them.

I would stay in-state for the most aid.

I’d recommend Rowan, I don’t think they will cost too much after financial aid, maybe about $10,000.

Stevens is also a great school. Tuition is $47,366, plus $15,200 for room & board. Even with aid, you’d probably have about $20,000 remaining. I think that’s too expensive, since students can’t take out that much in loans.

I’d check out Rutgers. I don’t think they’d be too expensive after aid.

I’d also recommend TCNJ, if you could get enough aid.

@newjerseygirl98 My CR+M is 1270 and I have applied to Temple already, but If I knew what I know now regarding my parents yearly income/how expensive schools really are I definitely wouldn’t have applied to there in the first place

I’ll definitely be applying to Rowan and TCNJ but not Baruch considering I’d rather not go to a commuter school.

The University of Richmond isn’t in the Northeast, but it does have a well-regarded business school and claims to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need. The average SAT M+CR of entering freshmen was 1295 in 2014, according to Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/bschools/rankings/undergraduate_mba_profiles/richmond.html).
It would be a reach, but less so than most other east coast schools on Bloomberg’s top 20 undergraduate b-school list. You might also have a look at Bentley or Loyola University MD.

I agree with others, though, that your most realistic options may be among NJ public schools (unless your SAT CR+M is high enough to qualify for big merit scholarships.)

@RLveteran Did you do the calculators for TCNJ and Rowan? I would be interested to see if they are less than Scranton or Siena.

If you can visit Scranton I highly recommend you do.

@TurnerT I just did the calculator now, my net prices for these schools before loans would be:
Rowan: 8,320
Scranton: 18,947
Siena: 18,966

The TCNJ calculator was a bit confusing so I didn’t include it but looks like in-state is substantially cheaper in this case… Guess I better start loving these New Jersey Schools

I did the Scranton calculator assuming 10k income, no assets, only one kid in school and it came out to 13k before loans.

TCNJ is an excellent school and nice campus. Rowan is getting there.

ignore this comment cant figure out how to delete it, lol

See if there are any NJ state grants that are not in the calculators.
