New College of Florida is in Sarasota. USF is a good school.

Flagler is also very beautiful and a good school.

^^^Flagler is a pretty school, but not at all on par with the 3 mentioned by the OP (UF, FSU, Miami) and, IMO, not as good as USF or New College.

Eckerd is another second tier school, in St. Pete. U of Central FL is a very up an coming school

When I have researched Flagler, I found that it has decent academics and I have found people comparing it to USF. It is not Yale, but people consider it a “hidden gem”. If you want Tampa, I would go with USF. New College of Florida is better and not that far away. I think Sarasota is a better area to live in then Tampa and I have been to both places.

Sarasota is closer to Ft. Myers then Tampa. I don’t know any schools in Ft. Myers from the top of my head, I do know of a community college though.

Flagler is a tier one school, http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/items/7893

Eckerd is Tier 3, http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/items/1487

You may like Rollins too. And I do agree none of these schools are as prestigious as UF, FSU, or UM. New College is the Honors College in Florida.

In my opinion the best are clearly FSU, UF and UM.

In terms of ranked research universities (numbers of ranked graduate programs) it would currently be UF then FSU.

Between all these schools you need to explain what majors you are interested in because one school may be much stronger than the others, assuming they all have the same area. The state schools generally try and limit program overlap, but in some areas it does occur.

P2N!!!
I am saving this post for posterity!! Go Gators!!

New College may be good if you like smaller classes sizes and if you want a liberal arts school. It’s all what type of you school want. UF is a great for journalism and I would pick it over FSU for that. FSU is better for film acting, so I would pick FSU over UF for that. It depends on your major too.

It depends on which program you’re interested in but generally speaking UF is the best. U of Miami is a close 2nd and FSU is a more distant 3rd. If liberal arts is your thing New College is pretty good. Rollins and Flagler are both good too.

FGCU is the regional university for the Ft. Myers area and it may not be a bad school but it’s nowhere near the best in Florida.

UF/New College

I agree with Gordon. I personally like the Southeast part of Florida, but the schools over there aren’t that great (FIU, FAU, etc).

Thank you early_college, I really like Southeast Florida too. Southeast Florida is a really great place but it’s only been a large metropolis for the past 50yrs or so. Now you’ve got one big city of 5 million or so inhabitants and U Miami is the only top ranked school… If you look at pretty much any very big city in the USA there is at least one good school New York: NYU & Columbia; DC: Georgetown; LA: Stanford, UCLA; Chicago: Chicago & Northwestern, Boston: Harvard, et al. Even Atlanta has GA Tech and Emory… Miami as a whole isn’t a well established city considering how young it is (University of Miami was only chartered in 1925) but it will catch up with the other big cities. A lot of bright students are going to want to go to school close to home so they will go to U of Miami and it will progressively move higher in the rankings. Since U of Miami is so expensive you’ll also have a public school (probably FIU) alternative rising in the ranks as well…

This is at least how I envision the scholastic evolution of South Florida playing out. It’s a beautiful and very affluent area, I don’t know anyone that would choose to live in Gainesville or Tallahassee over Miami Beach.

I use to live in South Florida for 10 years. I loved Palm Beach and the Fort Lauderdale area. I never lived in Miami, but I know there is good and bad parts. I went to visit Johnson and Wales last year and it is a good deal if your into culinary. My older brother wants to be a chef, but I think he rather go to the NC campus. I think that in Miami you have to know Spanish and my brother didn’t want to learn it. I live in Georgia now and boy do I miss Florida. It is a big change, no one was Southern in Florida and the whole atmosphere is different. I would imagine that there would be better schools in the Southeast part, but all the good schools tend to be in different area’s. I really do not like the West Coast of Florida, there is not as much things to do. I have never even been to Gainesville or Tallahassee and I’ve heard that North Florida is way different and is more like Georgia.

^^^ Depends on the person’s age, Gordon. Gainesville is a great town and one of the recommended places for retirees. Miami has a very different feel and lifestyle.

OP-
What do you want to study?

^^^Tallahassee is better. It does not have a Hogtown Creek, for example. :D

Go Noles!!

There are A LOT of retired people in South Florida. I don’t know about Miami but Boca, Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale have a lot of them.

Jym- I would have thought you were a bulldog fan!

1414,

Posted most of this in another thread, but it applies to here also. Are you coming OOS?

OK, the Common Data Set thread is really hard to get through and find the info. How about we put the three schools you mentioned together and everyone can look at the cold facts as reported by them,

Please pay attention to a couple of things regarding UMiami

Admission stats. UM admission rate is lower than UF/FSU. SAT/ACT 25/75 scores are higher than the state schools. UF gives a “GPA range” in its average GPA which doesn’t say if it is higher than UM’s 4.2 since the top end of their given 25/75 range is 4.3. UF boosters will point to the GPA averages and class rank, but 57% of UM’s students are OOS, most notably from the Northeast. UF/FSU are over 90% in-state. I would, with Bright Futures and UF’s top 5% preference expect this.

Student to faculty ratios: At 11 to 1, UMiami’s is almost half the state schools, who are in the 20-20.5 students to faculty ratio

Class Size: Over 50% of UMiami’s classes are 2-19 students…the state schools have the opposite, over 50% or more in the 20+ range, especially UF

Use all this data to make your own decisions…poster will have their own opinions, but absolute, unsupported statements of the “XXX is more selective or XXX Faculty is weak” wilt under analysis.
