I will be an incoming freshman next year at the University of Washington. I've heard a lot of the social life at udub revolves around greek life. I do not want to rush and I want to live in the dorms, but I still want to have a social life. I'm also pretty liberal and laid back and would like to meet people with similar characteristics. What dorm would be best for this?

Lander Hall is your best bet. It’s a freshman-only dorm and very social.

We are two of a kind my friend, im most likely going to UW next year (im down to my final two) and i was curious about where to live as well. Are there any other dorms, in case that one is unavailable?

Lander and Terry are good dorms to dorm in since they have buses that will take you to the heart of campus and you are right next to the Ave. Lander (as 2plus already stated) is a freshmen dorm and Terry is connected to Lander, but has upperclassmen as well as freshmen. If you don’t get Lander try to get Terry!

Don’t you have to be in UW Honors to be in Lander?

Nope, pretty sure that Lander accepts all freshman, though I heard it’s also going under construction this year and will be a great dorm next year.

I just toured UW and Terry and McCarty look the best. Terry seems to be more social while McCarty is more spacious and neat.

BTW, your description basically described myself. Nice to see that future Udubers are cool and liberal.

@racketracer Lander has one more year left before it’s being demolished.

@Pippa - No, Lander is open to all freshman. It’s just that there’s a designated floor for Honors (Lander 8)

DS lived in Lander for Early Fall Start then moved to McCarty for fall. He really regretted leaving Lander, even though he was in a tiny triple, as it was far more social than McCarty and most of his EFS friends stayed in Lander. He was in a triple in McCarty that had a lot more room but really missed south campus. He just swapped rooms and is now in Stevens Court which he absolutely loves - full kitchen, lots of space, and a single room (so far). He is applying for Stevens Court for next year as well. When he did all his research last year, he really thought north campus would be a better fit and that he wouldn’t enjoy too much noise/activity. He said it was a huge mistake and would highly recommend Lander and EFS for any freshman.

Question: Do you guys think freshman are going to try to get into Poplar Hall (the new residence hall)? Or will that be populated by upperclassmen?

I thought McMahon was supposed to be the best dorm?

I think Poplar will be one of my top dorms if freshmen can apply :)

^
Maybe, since Poplar is going to be more expensive than the other dorms…

When are you guys going to complete your housing application? Right when it goes live?

^
Yes. I will be home when it goes live anyway, so I might as well take advantage of that opportunity.

North capmus greek row ftw. Not living in a frat. But I’ve heard that’s where the life of uw is, so I’m staying in a house on there with 50 other uw guys :)

^ Kind of sounds like a frat. You seem to know about frats, could you give me the pros and cons of living in a frat? I’m actually interested in joining. I already know about rushing, I just want to know your opinion, thanks.
