Dorms

1) When can we apply for dorms?
2) Where do you want to dorm and why?
3) I'm thinking about applying lander and terry, which one would be better/differences (besides the fact that it's a freshmen dorm)?

bump
anyone???

1) April 6, 2010
2) McCarty - Honors Floor, not as noisy as Lander (also has an Honors Floor)
3) I don’t really know anything about Terry… so I can’t tell you, sorry! I know Lander (because it’s a freshman dorm) is super loud though.

I would choose Haggett, McMahon, and McCarty over Terry and Lander. more centrally located and better environments. although dorm life in general is rather unpleasant imo

I am a Freshmen and I can assure you Lander is the best, especially in the beginning of the year. Everyone is really social and crazy, pro tip - DO EFS, especially if you are a guy and you want to get into frat party’s without joining. If you can snag a double in Lander it should be good. Also Honors floors are LAME, most of them are pretty straight edge and don’t like to have fun. SMOKE WEEED

@mooper - do you get written up much? Haha, I actually have a question about that. What happens when an RA ‘write you up’?

not much. it’s a warning basically and if you get written up again you might have to have a talk with the RD.

apparently i got written up for having a halogen lamp in my room when they inspected over winter break (yes, they go into every room and check your stuff- ****ed up imo) and i got an email about it saying they may come and check again. well 8 weeks later i’m still using the lamp and the place hasn’t burnt down yet. shocker.

Haha, good to know. Who is the RD? Resident… something?

If you get written up too much, do you get kicked out?

Resident Director, You don’t get in trouble unless you get written up like 8 times for the same offense. But most of the RA’s don’t give a **** about anything, I have been in rooms playing kings cup with 15 people with a keg, have an RA walk in, talk to them raging drunk and not get written up.

mooper you are lucky, my RA will write you up for anything

I’ve visited Lander, Terry, and Haggett during winter break.
I hated Haggett because it was too dark and the building was ugly…

Lander and Terry did look the same room wise, but I did think that Terry had a slightly bigger room than Terry and the hallways in Terry looked a lot cleaner and wider than Lander.
However, I am now starting to reconsider Lander again, because I might sign up for FIGs. I plan on being sociable with the dorm people, but at the same time I do want to study hard. I’m not exactly the type of person who would go to parties w/ alcohol and smoking. & fyi I’m a girl.

I am concerned about the noise level…I’m going to expect that it will be loud, but I hope it doesn’t stay too long…I’m planning on studying in my dorm room…

Anyone living in Lander (or Terry), can you give us an overview of what it is like living there?

I’m planning to apply to Stevens Court (Single Room) or Hansee Hall. What do you think about these dorms?

I know it is a typo. Could you please clarify? Thanks.

Also, how many people do they put in each room - two or three?

ohh yeah, it’s ‘Terry is bigger than Lander’
lol, thanks for pointing that out.

To those who have already had dorm experience for at least a quarter:

I will study hard (in the library or dorm) but at the same time I will enjoy the college/social life. That does not mean I want to party and drink 24/7. I might attend a party once in awhile but my main focus is education while establishing close relationships with good friends. I know the supply of information is scant, but on the basis of this, which dorm do you think is the best fit for me?

^^^^dariop: from people I know, both Stevens Court and Hansee are two of the nicer options. Stevens Court is “apartment style living” i.e. you get a shared room, kitchen, bathroom with a few other people. SC is south, i don’t like it’s location. Hansee is north, near McCarty and 45th street. It’s considered to be the “quiet” dorm and has predominantly singles. Some consider it anti-social but i think that depends on what kind of person you are. if you’re outgoing, you will meet people anywhere, if not you may have to work a little harder at it.

Actually I strongly prefer SC, but the single room. Because I will have lot of apartment-mates to have fun with, but also I will be able to have my own place where I can study and think quietly.

I definitely think that’s the best option, at least for me. :)

I am a freshman at UW this year and live in Terry Hall. I’m most familiar with Terry and Lander, but know a bit about the others as well.

I enjoy living in Terry, it’s pretty much exactly what I expect from a college dorm? The rooms are either doubles or triples (I got a double), and there are roughly 70 people per floor. The one unique feature is that there is a single unisex bathroom on every floor, which means you may have to walk up or down a short flight of stairs to go to the bathroom like I do. I really don’t mind it, and I had to do it on crutches for about a month. Just something to consider if you think it might bother you. Also, Terry is mostly freshmen and sophomores, but it is a little less social than Lander. People kept their doors open at the beginning of the year, but now they’re mostly closed and people aren’t that interested in meeting each other anymore.

Lander is attached to Terry by the 1101 Cafe, and is entirely freshmen. I know a lot of people who really like it there, and overall it is a more friendly, social atmosphere since everyone is looking to make friends. There are also male and female restrooms on each floor, so that is different from Terry. I can’t speak for the Lander noise level since I don’t live there, but our floor in Terry is supposed to be the loudest one, and I really don’t notice it that much. I do a lot of homework and studying in my room, and rarely (I can probably count the instances on one hand) feel like it is too loud to study. I would recommend Lander for freshmen over Terry, it’s just a more social atmosphere which is important in your first year.

Those are the halls I know the most about, but I’ll give a bit of information about the others.

Steven’s Court - “apartment” style, although I think you still share bedrooms. In the same area of campus as Terry/Lander and the Ave.

Mercer - also around Terry/Lander, generally regarded as the least desirable dorm. I have never been there, but I would not list it on your application.

McMahon - cluster style, with 8 people sharing a common area and bathroom, and then four very small bedrooms attached. May be reserved for 18 and older? Also, it is said that you may become close with your cluster mates, but there isn’t a lot of socializing between clusters. Located on “north” campus, which is somewhat closer to the rest of campus. This was a big turn off for me.

McCarty - my top choice for next year, I haven’t spent that much time in it, but it has the engineering themed floor, so a lot of engineering types flock to it even if they don’t live on the theme floor. I’m mainly considering it since I think a lot of my friends will be in that area next year.

Haggett - defining features is hexagonal rooms. Because of this unique layout, all of the furniture is fixed in place, and all of these rooms are DOUBLES (whereas there are triples in almost all other halls). Also feature walk-in closets which is a big selling point to some people. Instead of long hallways, the floors of Haggett each have four separate smaller hallways, which are all connected to the lounge which is shared by each pair of floors. Next to McMahon/McCarty.

Hansee - advertised as the quiet dorm on UW’s website, although I have never been there and thus do not know the atmosphere. Likely the best study environment if you require absolute silence to study, but also probably not very social at all.

Lastly, keep in mind that only Terry/Lander and McMahon have dining halls in their actual building. For instance, Haggett residents will make the short two minute walk to McMahon for food, as will McCarty residents. Although McCarty has a convenience store “Ian’s Domain” which also sells some food in addition to other odd things, but it doesn’t offer meals like McMahon’s “The 8” or Terry/Lander’s “1101 Cafe.”

That’s a short run down. Any other questions I’ll do my best to answer.

Thanks compactrunner for the info! I have a few questions about Terry/Lander - do you think Terry/Lander Hall is a bit farther from the campus? And do you think it is more likely to get a triple in Lander instead of Terry?

Thanks

thank you so much compactrunner! it really helped me to know more about terry
i do have one more questions. is it kind of ‘dangerous’ to get to terry/lander at night? i’ve been hearing that people have been robbed on ave street, and a lot of gangs(?) on one side of a street. since i’m a female, i am a little worried about that.
ohh and my other question is same w/ bokchoy’s question: ‘is it more likely to get a triple in Lander instead of Terry?’ and would turning in app ‘guarantee’ a double for me if i strongly say that i want a double on my app? thanks.

@bokchoy
i visited uw during 2nd winter break and it is out of campus, so you need to walk like 10min or a little less to get to campus. but i see that as a nice, daily ‘walk/exercise’ lol.
