D just got into Pace IPE for Directing, via email from the head of the IPE program (maybe the same who emailed your daughter, @coronado – congrats!). Mentioned that the letter is in the mail, but he wanted to let her know ahead of time, and to set up a call. So that’s how the Directing program is doing it, I guess. I find the IPE program pretty fascinating, personally – the idea of a core ensemble of actors working with rotating student directors making new works… If I were back in school, it’d be damned tempting
Congratulations to all the acceptances coming in today!
My D was also accepted to Boston U! As a lifelong dancer she is so impressed my the movement teacher there… happy day for her.
@HopeinMT yes, my S does have some very good options now. But for a couple of weeks it was a number of rejections in a row, and from the schools he most hoped for. He has since gotten into a a few very good bfa programs and so he is much happier. (And so am i) But we had a very bad two weeks. He wasnt sleeping well and was anxious so i wasnt sleeping well and was anxious. It is very hard to watch your child be so disappointed, esp because all these kids are trying so hard!
My son got a yes from BU too! Only need to hear from one more school and this phase is done! Let the college visits begin.
Can someone tell me about the BFA at Emerson
WOW Congrats to all…in 24 hours yes from Emerson, No from BU and Yes from Pace …what a crazy ride
@robinmom We went on a tour of Emerson College…fantastic program for Acting and Film and they have a ton of successful alumni. They are on almost every “best theatre program” list.
I hear that some got calls from BU. I just checked the portal over and over. We got a yes letter in the portal but no call. Do you think a letter will follow?
Congrats to all the BU acceptances. My daughter is heart-broken over her rejection - she knew the odds, she just thought she was a one of those "fit"s they talk about. Tough day here, way tougher than any of the other rejections. But I have faith that things will work out for her, it just may be down a different road than she expected.
@CaMom13 I’m so sorry to hear about this. No one wants to hear any of those Kumbaya stories (especially my son after he was waitlisted for Juilliard but here it is. I know that it doesn’t feel like it right now but something on down typically happens that is even better. It’s just hard to know it when right now feels so bad. You’re so right. Things will work out. I’m a true believer of this
I am so sorry @CaMom13 I have been there too many times in your shoes already. It hurts when they hurt. We are all hoping and praying for everyone to find a good fit. She will. Hugs to you both.
@CaMom13, I hear you SO hard. For my D, it was Rutgers. She had been dreaming of going there for the past two years - everything about the program was EXACTLY what she was looking for, and touring the school cemented it even further. At the audition, after she did her monologues, they sent her to another room to be filmed, which seemed promising. When she got the email saying she was NOT invited to the weekend callback, she was absolutely devastated. To make it worse, some girls in her school DID get the callback, and she kept hearing them talk about it. It was a very painful time.
Big hugs to you and your daughter! I hope she gets an acceptance she loves soon!
@CaMom13 BU was my son’s first choice. Went to their summer progrsm, applied ED and was rejected. Very hard. So sorry for your daughter’s disappointment. Does she have other options on the table?
@SFSClark my son was at BUSTI too this summer. He applied ED and was deferred and then rejected. He told me he does not know anyone from BUSTI who was accepted
@actorparent1 Wow. what a heartbreaking story.
I didn’t think there would be 5 kids (let alone 5 girls!) from the same school invited on such an exclusive callback weekend. Isn’t it only around 50 kids total? Your D’s school must offer some pretty spectacular training. Sending huge hugs to her and to you.
Just a suggestion that you consider sharing this story with your D’s counselor upon graduation. Sounds like teaching kids to be gracious winners who are considerate of their classmates’ feelings is, let’s say, something of a growth area for the school.
@emf1959 Interesting! My son, though, went year before summer 2016 (after his sophomore year). One girl from his program did get in(she was a rising senior) She auditioned at Busti and was accepted on the spot. Not sure anyone else got in that year either. …
@emf1959 i will let my son know about this year’s busti kids not getting in either. Maybe it worked against them, who knows?!
@katew529, yeah, it’s a performing arts school that often has kids get into top programs. It just makes it hard if you’re not one of them!
To be clear, the girls were not being rude - other kids asked them how the weekend went, so they were just answering the question. Not their fault. They’re all nice kids. It was just hard for D to hear when she was still feeling so sad about it.
WOW!! There has been A LOT of activity on this in the last day!! Congratulations to all the acceptances and relieved kids and parents. And, much love to all of those feeling the sting of not what was hoped for. Everyone here is rooting for you! As we all know, this is an experience unlike anything else. So many dedicated, talented kids! When we started on this journey last spring, we thought we had a sense of what this would be like. Wow, I were so naive! It is so hard to even know what schools to apply to when the initial list is created. It is so daunting. Most seem to have a good view of the dream schools…but there are only so many spots at these and it is brutal to say the least. The majority of us have kids that will not be attending the “dream” school and that is okay too. Wishing everyone “dreamy” financial aid and scholarships!! The next leg of this journey is bound to be just as tricky!
When my daughter went through this process at the end if it all she said “my dream school is going to be the one that wants me and then “I” will make MY dreams come true!”
Wow, @actorparent1. So interesting to hear! Add to my list of info I wish they’d publish: what percentage of kids come from PA schools. I’d somehow have assumed (very naively, it seems) that programs like Mason Gross would diversify a callback list more widely, both geographically (on a more general level) and when it comes to specific HS’s.
For the benefit of the HS class of 2019 onward, perhaps anyone with kids already in college could share some insight into which schools are more open (and which less open) to kids who don’t already have 4 years of PA education under their belts? Guessing that if, say, Rutgers gave approx 20% of its girls’ callback slots to classmates from the same PA HS, they may also be giving a significant # of the remaining spots to kids from other PA high schools. If (just hypothetically) people knew they call back, let’s say, 5 to 8 girls per year from non-PA high schools, this might help people make more realistic lists.
Very glad to hear people weren’t being unkind to your D. Realistically, in this field, basic facts are all too often unkind in and of themselves.
