BFA Acting Pre-Screen and Auditions. Class of 2022 - Sharing!

@BrokeDad0530 a friend of my daughter attended there. I think it was an 8 week session. She seemed to like it. she’s at 4 year university now. There seem to be a lot of international students there. My d auditioned for a couple student films there. There is no housing and it right across the street from
Battery Park.

@marg928 would you Pm me too about Rider? My son is looking at that and BU. Thanks!!

Did anyone receive a callback workshop for RADA?

My son declined DePaul Tuesday for anyone looking for the waitlist to move soon.

Where is he still thinking about, if you don’t mind my asking? DePaul is an awesome program.

@Notmommarose BU and UNCSA — he also is holding on to Pace MT for now. They’re making it difficult for him to say no, but he needs to release it soon.

@NotMamaRose tell me about it. He’s still on the fence about DePaul and NYU

If you google The Goodman School of Drama, you will find a very long list of Alumni all the way up into the rename of The Theatre School. Their studio is Amazing! An excellent program

If you google chicago film studios, google maps should let you travel through the blocks of movie, tv show studios.
My kid is here, thats his struggle but i’m trying my best to sell him on the vision

@debtedho Did you see this thread about RADA auditions? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/theater-drama-majors/2063235-rada.html#latest

Yes! I understand. NYU has the name to non theatre people - but DePaul is the real deal, in terms of training. I guess my thing with NYU is the studios are studios that are open to others for training. Atlantic Theater or Stella Adler, they’ll always be there to take class and train . But a conservatory, like DePaul is a one time deal. My two cents! NYU It’s a little bit like”out sourcing” acting class. . He’s young so he wants “ New York” .

Hi I have tried locating the thread before asking, but have not been able to quickly find the number of students in the freshman class to each program. The ones I don’t know, that we have left to visit, are LIU BFA MT & Acting and Ithaca BFA MT/Acting and BA Directing. We are going to NYU Tische also, but I have those numbers.

@NotMamaRose I beg to differ regarding NYU. My d is in her 3rd year there and I can not say enough good things about their amazing conservatory style training. They are wonderful about choosing the right studio fit for their students. It is unlike taking individual classes at places like Adler in that you are immersed in your studio working with a tight knit group and creating and performing work after work. The opportunities are endless. They have wonderful study abroad theatre opportunities as well and after two years at one studio the students can switch to another studio or go to Stone Street for Film acting. They care about good training and realize that there are many different acting methods and it’s a gift that they are able to provide different styles that work for different actors and not try to fit all actors into one method. We have a good friend who is a broadway producer and every time we go back stage and get introduced to the cast my d is introduced as studying at NYU which immediately gets lots of — “I went there” or “you have to meet so and so she went there.” Others from my D’s High School have followed in her footsteps and are equally happy at NYU. @actingdreams if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

I also disagree with @NotMamaRose ‘s characterization of the studio system. First of all- I believe now the plurality, if not the majority of the studio are actually completely run by NYU. (Hence the shift from Cap21 to NSB for MT). Of the others- I think only Adler, Atlantic, and Strasbourg offer independent classes. It isn’t “outsourcing”- it’s collaboration. I can speak directly to Adler as that was D’s primary studio, the teachers there are VERY much a part of NYU as a whole. The NYU kids are on their own floor of the building - have their own facilities etc, the head of the NYU program is ONLY associated with those kids- not independent Adler. I have always seen it as a bonus - my kid is getting training from working professionals who college graduates pay to study with while in college. And as @theatreloverca mentions above, and I have mentioned times- I think the single greatest advantage NYU offers is flexibility of intense conservatory training. Because they have various studios a kid has unlimited possibilities. My own kid spent 2.5 years at Adler, a semester studying Shakespeare at RADA (offered via NYU) and a year at Stonestreet film. Her friends have studied in Amsterdam (also an abroad option via Tisch - experimental theater) done Classical theater, spent time in the tech studio to develop skills/interests there, crossed over into the playwrights program - you name it, she knows someone who has done it.

@theatreloverca and @toowonderful and any other knowing NYU parents- Is there any point or value (since studio assignments haven’t yet come out) if your child has an interest in some studio’s in particular with writing a compelling case for why and emailing admissions ? I think on one hand this is sort of interfering with their process on the other my daughter has some strong preferences and I wonder if she framed it well if perhaps it couldn’t hurt? Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

@toowonderful and @theatreloverca you both did a great job of explaining the studio system and why it’s so awesome! I am so happy my D chose it and experienced it. Her training was beyond anything she expected and actually more intense than many of her friends who did choose “conservatory” programs. The comments I have read on cc over the years about the NYU studio system have really made me think that NYU is not doing a great job explaining the system! Maybe they need to have us do some rewriting for them! LOL

@jbtcat - I completely agree that NYU could do a better job explaining/promoting how their system works. Plus - not at ALL a fan of their web stuff - Albert is a PAIN.

@laylamom - I heard a “rumor” (from my D who is a TA to someone on the admissions committee this semester) that studios may be coming out today. I would let it happen, and then, if you are unhappy with option - there is a process to appeal. I know one girl who had a successful appeal - she was placed in MT and had decided she wanted acting. But as a variety of people have mentioned - NYU is pretty dang smart about where they put people - I have known (or at least know ABOUT b/c they are friends of D) a dozen kids who thought they would hate their studio who ended up falling in LOVE with it

@toowonderful Thank you so much and very good to know! @jbtcat I so agree that they could explain better. I can’t believe all of the fantastic opportunities I wasn’t aware of at Tisch as well, such exciting possibilities!
Albert confuses the he** out of me. I fear Albert!

@laylamom, I agree with @toowonderful, NYU is really good at choosing the “right” studio for each student. They pay attention to the students background and listen when they interview the students. Sometimes students think they won’t like a particular studio and then they fall in love. My d is in Playwrights Horizons and couldn’t be happier. They have broadened her Horizons more than I ever thought possible. She has even been able to take classes in choreography which she loves.

@theatreloverca my D was in Playwrights also and loved it! She stayed with them for her junior year as well and then did Stonestreet for her senior year. Great experiences!

@jbtcat Yes, it’s a wonderful supportive studio, my D is still there as well as a junior and is now contemplating her next year. They might work a path for her to be at Playwrights and another studio for her senior year! Congratulations to your D, she’s graduating and on to the next step, fantastic!
