I will be a CAS freshman this fall. Will I need a bicycle to get around campus. Thinking about the commute between Mews and the arts quad.

i’m a transfer on west campus with the same concern

The arts quad is literally the closest quad to north. If that’s where you’re planning to bike to then you won’t need a bike. I recommend biking if you’re trekking to the engineering quad AND you are bike-savvy. So many people get into accidents because of the hills and they don’t know how to maneuver a bike properly. West campus is worse because it is uphill to get to any destination. Biking would be more of a hassle than walking. Also the weather only permits for you to use the bike for the first and last few months of the school year. In between there is a lot of rainy and snowy days; days where walking/taking the bus is better than biking.

Hope this helps.
Final Verdict–don’t bring a bike. If you truly want one you can rent/borrow one on campus. The company is called Big Red Bikes.

Sorry to jack this thread, transfer living in collegetown here, but on the topic of bikes is there any risk of theft? Because I have a really nice road bike that I would hate to have stolen, and it kinda stands out with bright colors and looks real cool so it might be a target.

And is there any place you can keep a bike under some sort of roof? Because I really wouldn’t want mine out in the rain…

I don’t know of many roofed areas for bikes on campus. Ithaca overall is very safe, but bike thefts do happen especially on campus. However, the risk of it occurring is much lower than for most major cities.
