I was thinking of bringing a bike to campus this fall (I'm a transfer).

Would it be worth it? Any opinions on bikes from current Cornell students? Do they get stolen often? Are bike racks convenient and plentiful? Is riding during winter impossible?

Depends on you - a majority of students don’t bike, but a sizable number do. There are plenty of bike racks around campus, there are enough bike lanes or paths where bikes can go (and I believe all the TCAT buses have bike racks on the front if you’re traveling further), but in my opinion the 2 major obstacles are 1) the hills and 2) snow at winter. I don’t think I’ve seen more than 1 or 2 people riding in the winter. If you’re living on north campus or collegetown, the inclines aren’t too bad for biking, and I know people who live in both places who have bikes; it’s harder on West Campus because of the slope.

I see a solid number of students on bikes year-round. It’s obviously more challenging in the winter (due to snow) than in the spring or early fall, but if you’re a good enough biker, than I think it would be advantageous to bring.

If you currently bike, it’s probably worth it. If you don’t, you probably won’t turn into one. The hills are a significant barrier to a worthwhile experience if you aren’t already used to biking.

If you are going to living on West, I would suggest not bringing it since the winter weather is a challenge when you are trying to go uphill with your bike.

Honestly, the depending on the weather which being Ithaca is unpredictable it may just turn out that you will not get a chance to use your bike that often than perhaps the first month of the fall semester. If you really enjoy biking, I would suggest renting one from Uris. No need to bring your own which is also a hassle when you are packing your stuff when the year ends.

I had a bike some of the time I lived on West. if it’s convenient for you, bring one. I liked to put my bike on the front of a bus for going up the big hills and then bike around flat areas (either Cornell campus or down in Ithaca.) there bike racks on West can get a little crowded, but I could always find a place.
I knew at least one person I recall who had a bike stolen, but I had my bike on campus for about 3 years, and it survived with no tampering or interference at all.
