My S is going to be a freshman at Harvard this fall. He is thinking to bring his bike to Harvard. Does he need bike as a freshman?

No, not really. Everything's so close. His life will be in the Yard. And biking around Harvard in the winter is pretty crappy.

Also, storing it in the snow times is a drag.

If he plays a sport, it might be nice to have a bike to ride across the river to the athletic complex, but still, most athletes don't have bikes and sort of walk along and talk to each other as they go to practice.

Even in upperclassman years, most students don't need bikes...unless you're quadded, really. I am in an upperclass house close to the Yard, so, despite being an athlete, I don't think I'll ever want to have a bike @H.

If he's really attached to his bike, bring it...Otherwise, it's really not worth the hassle.

sunglasses
thank you very much. I think you gave a sound advice.

ALSO: There are really cheap bike sales throughout the year...so better that he just buy a cheap one here if he feels like he needs one than to bring his up. That also eliminates the chances of a nice bike from home going unused and then being stolen (which happens from time to time).

Phillips Brooks House Association ( http://www.pbha.org ) holds a bike auction of used bikes in early October. All the proceeds support student-led public service. Your son can come check out these bikes if he finds he wants one when he gets to campus.

My bike (actually a friend's bike I was just borrowing for the summer) was just stolen. Ugh.

Bikes are more useful in the summer, or if you live in the quad as an upperclassman.

Uh oh. Does TOC know? I'm so bored at work!! :O

I sent TOC an email, but no response yet. Do you have his number?

-Equally bored at work

Yes I do. I'll PM you it.

Is there good bike storage in general--besides outdoors? I live in Boston area, I'm just curious. I know there are lots of nice racks for bikes outside, but for winter...? Someone said it was troublesome, but is it impossible to keep it inside somewhere while still having ready access to it? Is it the kind of situation that you need to put it away in a closet and then get it out if you don't want to keep it outside?

I like to bike, if not to get places, so just wondering. Not that I'm like OP's S, not admitted to harvard :p

Some people keep their bikes in their rooms (not fun if you're on the fourth floor) or in dorm common areas (kind of rude). Also, some upperclass houses have indoor bike racks (Adams does... any others?)
