My grades have gone up significantly since freshman year but I'm still worried about the effect that a mediocre cumulative gpa might have on my chances.

You have a good list in that your reach schools are not unrealistically high reaches. That is not to say you will get into them all, but at least you have a shot. I don’t know what your financial aid requirements are. You probably will get accepted to Boston College but they don’t give good merit-based aid, except to just a “handful” of accepted applicants who apply EA. If you are looking for some merit-based aid, you may want to cast a wider net and apply to more schools that are solid matches. You had a “shaky” start but, as you say, your upward trend in grades 11 and 12 is impressive. This might want to be addressed in your application somewhere and maybe have your GC make some comments as well, since you are applying to some highly selective heavyweights. Hopefully, your top 10% rank is closer to top 5% to improve your chances at the most selective schools on your list that have highly competitive applicant pools.

I agree 100% with the poster above me. Do you have any other ECs that are maybe not as academic based? Maybe something art related or sports related? I don’t know, I’ve just always like well diversified applications that span throughout the disciplines. I think the only weakness to your application is a lack of creative and athletic EC, otherwise I’d say you should do well! Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the replies. Yes my rank is technically in the top 6.5%. My major non-academic EC would probably be web-design/programming. I obtained an internship last summer with a local company.

-Vanderbilt (ED) : high match/low reach
-Boston College: match
-Johns Hopkins : high match
-Washington University in St. Louis: high match
-Northeastern : safety
-University of Vermont: safety
-Cornell : reach
Don’t know about Middlebury.

I’d say you have a chance everywhere. Great SAT score and the upward trend will definitely help you out. I think your ability to speak 3 languages will really help you out. Good luck…you will get into most of them!

If your rank is that high and you have a C, your chances to many colleges are strong just because you have that improvement factor. Just as above I think you are Johns Hopkins standard.

It’s hard to tell what your GPA is but your test scores look good. You have adequate extra-curricular activities and some leadership positions but all your awards are academic based (I dont even think National Honor Society is really considered an award?). Like I said, your scores are good but your weakness is in your leadership/ECs/community service. I’d say you have fair chance… now just try to stand out through your essays! Best of luck!

I like the upward trend. Good job!Keep it up!!
-Vanderbilt (ED)-- low reach… still very good chance (ED helps a bit!)
-Boston College-- match
-Johns Hopkins-- reach
-Washington University in St. Louis-- mid reach (very competitive school)
-Northeastern-- low match/safety
-University of Vermont-- safety
-Cornell-- reach
-Middlebury-- not really sure
Good luck!! I hope you get into ur number 1 college!!!

WUSTL is gonna be a reach as will JHU…Cornell is an ivy so it’s a reach for everyone…your grades are very good and your SAT score does meet the standards of most of your schools so you have a good chance… Good luck

Wow, they let you take AP french even though it is your native language? They never let students at my school take the same foreign language as their native language. Must have been nice since you already knew how to speak it.

Yes. Few people know/check where you were born. All of the Spanish speaking Latino kids that I know take AP Spanish and all of the Koreans take the SAT II in Korean to get exempt from one subject test. I don’t know to what extent this harms your candidacy though.

Pretty much what everyone else said, your EC’s are lacking in non-academic areas. Pretty good test scores (but I think some of these schools require 2 SATII’s - don’t quote me on that though). I don’t think your freshman GPA will hurt you that much.

-Vanderbilt (ED) - Low reach/high match? Don’t know too much about that school

-Johns Hopkins - (Low) Reach
