Bike Theft

Only 3 weeks on campus and front tire stolen off my Ds new bike outside of Marks Tower. Didnt buy the lock with the extra front tire cable because it looked so cumbersome but will now. The bike next to hers was stolen except for the back tire. Why is bike theft such a problem at SC? It seems more prevalent than other schools. Is it other students (hope not) or outsiders?

The main problem is most students don’t know how to lock a bike. The front or rear tire can be easily removed. You need to lock the front tire to the frame right behind it and lock the back tire + back frame onto the bike rack. This is how you lock bikes in big cities to keep them from being stolen (especially in sf & nyc).

I see students who just throw a lock on their back tire/frame and don’t even lock it to a bike rack and expect no one to steal it -_-

Photo to give an idea of a good way to lock: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Fq5DQuP3x0/SCItuimAqLI/AAAAAAAAAfQ/Jwq5nldP958/s400/LockBike.JPG

I would do the above but with two strong kryptonite U-locks instead of one being a chain lock which can be cut with bolt cutters.

I’ve had exactly zero bikes stolen in 4 years so far at SC. The trick is to back your bike into the spot, then use a U-lock to lock from the rear frame, through the tire, and to the rack. The other trick is to go to the bike shop and have them switch out quick-release tires and quick-adjust seats for nice solid non-adjustable nuts and bolts.

I’ve never locked the front tire and I don’t see a need to.

Her bike was locked with the back frame to the bike rack with a Kryptonite u-lock. The front tire was NOT a quick release tire but had regular nuts. Thia was a new Electra Cruiser. Nice bike but not a high end bike (or tire). The seat is not quick release either but now worry we need to chain that up to. I guess all that beefed up security isnt helping this problem!

No amount of security can stop a bike thief unless the bike is properly locked unfortunately. They are quick and skilled at what they do so they will target bikes that are the least locked to rip off cause they can get away with it without anyone noticing.

DPS goes around arresting bike thieves during the summer… lots of kids from the neighborhood who want easy cash, unfortunately. Saw them collar two of the punks up front last may
