Biking around campus

Hey,

I'm going to be in De Neve, and was wondering how the biking around campus will work out. Are there bike racks outside of De Neve? Am I allowed to ride around anywhere around campus or are there strict biking rules? By the way, how long would it take to ride my bike to the beach?

UCLA is really hilly... not good for biking. Most students walk to and fro class and back to the Hill (dorms area).

It seems to me that you can ride a bike to santa monica pier and be there within a few hours. I've looked into it, actually, because i am also thinking about biking to the pier.

Google earth may give you an idea.

few hours?

the beach is 6 miles away. you can walk there in probably 2-3 hours!

how does one get to santa monica pier? be specific: which buses?

take me along too, i miss the beaches terribly!!!

be specific: which buses?

ohh dawritingmachine: a simple google search as opposed to investing in the forum?

my friend said that the big blue bus will take you right to the 3rd street promenade at Santa Monica for just 25 cents.

Biking is amazing. I've walked to and from classes all of last year (from Summit). Most classes take me about 20-30 minutes to get to. I finally got a bike this summer, and it has made my life so much easier. I can actually get to Ackerman in like 3 minutes, and probably no more than 10 for any class, no matter how far. I'd recommend it :)

That's correct Yams. I've taken the bus there several times.

I always thought biking was too much of a hassle, sofakingwangsta. All my classes are north campus and once you go a little pass Ackerman, it becomes a hassle to bike up there.

I thought of getting a skateboard instead though. I figure that's pretty good since it's easy to carry once you hit the hills.

well, i wouldnt ride a bike unless it got training wheels...

and tried skateboards once...vowed to myself never again

I only fear dropping my hat while going down Charles E Young or getting hit by a car. Most likely the latter is my biggest concern :(.

The former is more of my concern seeing that I'm already dead and zombie-like. :( :( :(

Sweet Jee-----, I need to get out of here.

Most people walk to class, but there are a ton who bike, skateboard/longboard, scooter, etc. to class. There's no designated lanes for them on campus, so you pretty much just have to weave around people.

Biking past Ackerman isn't so bad since there is a path for disabled/wheelchair that I see people often use. But as a longboarder myself, I find that it's convenient because you can just carry it uphill or stairs and don't have to worry about bike locks or anything.

Oh, and to get to Santa Monica you just take any of the Big Blue Buses for 25 cents except for 12 I think. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I know for sure that 1, 2, 3 and 4 definitely drop you off at the 3rd st. promenade or closer to the beach, but either way you're in Santa Monica.

Yes, the lower number buses (< 8, not all though) should take you to 3rd Street and the SM Beach. It will probably take around 40 minutes on the bus, assuming you leave in the afternoon.

re there bike racks outside of De Neve?

Yes, between Birch and the Dykstra-DeNeve terminus. You must have a lock and lock on the rack though.

Indeed, it will take about 100-120 minutes if you bike to the beach.

Similarly, a previous quesiton was "How long does it take to walk to downtown LA from UCLA?" I think the answer is about 150 minutes without breaks.

Walking to downtown? That's crazy. Walking to Westwood is slightly annoying enough already.
