Bing or Geneseo and why!?

I can imagine many of us who applied to Bing also applied to Geneseo...just curious for those of you deciding or those who already have decided; where are you leaning towards and why?

Im curious too…what are you leaning towards?

I’m in thee same boat guys, got into both have no idea which to attend. I’ve visited geneseo this past weekend and it was nothing spectaular in my opinion, I think after visiting it made me think less of the school. I may be being overly harsh since the only other school I’ve visited so far is Cornell and I may be comparing the two which is unfair. I suggest you guys visit both then decide which one you want to go to

Definitely visit Geneseo if you can. I’ve found it to be a love it or hate it kind of place. It’s really rural, much more in the middle of nowhere than Binghamton is. Pretty, quaint, small campus, liberal arts focused. Very different atmosphere than Binghamton.

They are very different schools. Geneseo has a much smaller population(around 5,000) and has a more intimate feel-- like a small liberal arts college with a small town feel. Binghamtom is much bigger and is considered a University Center. Probably more diverse, but not as much of a “personal” feel. Bigger city, but the city isn’t much to write home about.

I actually like Geneseo’s campus better. Its such a personal decision.

Yeah i havent visited either and i think the campus is what will be the deciding factor…im also going pre-med and i really dont know which one prepares students better for mcats and medical school…btw i think im leaning more towards geneseo for the d3 sports and smaller feel

Son was accepted to both and decided on Binghamton. We visited both in one weekend and pretty quickly decided fit was better at Binghamton. He wasn’t a fan of the location of Geneseo or of the facilities in general. He is also looking towards pre med track. Both schools are very good, it all depends on fit.

Apples and Oranges. Binghamton provides much more of a big university feel while Geneseo is a more small rural liberal arts feel. Definitely would not advise making a pick without visiting campus, especially if you are picking Geneseo. Geneseo students seem to be very focused academically, where as Binghamton (which is also an academically serious school) is a bit more rowdy in terms of night life. One of the coolest things about Geneseo to me and why I’m most likely going to Geneseo is the individualized attention. Professors are there solely for the purpose of undergraduate education, no grad students, no billion dollar research (Geneseo still does have a tremendous amount of research). I plan to be bio/pre med and the only thing that I have heard against Geneseo is that the biology program is extremely rigorous and getting high grades is very difficult, not sure about this at Binghamton.

@redsrules

Geneseo accepts 3’s on AP scores too. In fact Geneseo gives you more credits for your AP exams than Binghamton will give you. So seems like you are being biased with your statement of “I think it is one of the only colleges in the country that will give credit for a 3 or 4 on AP exams”.

how is the Binghamton fan base for sports and such?

It depends on whether you want a smaller town/smaller school feel or a larger town/university feel. Or if you’re considering any pre-professional career path (engineering or accounting for example), you’d be better off in Binghamton which has excellent programs you can apply into.

Also: redsrule, I think you have a problem with any public university. These problems are not unique to Binghamton and are probably also present in Geneseo as well since they are also a part of SUNY. I’ve spent four years in Binghamton and I’ve had a great experience. Public universities require you to be self-motivated. If you’re not, then you won’t get the experience that someone at a private LAC is given by enrolling. A different educational philosophy and a different culture.

As for the sports: This is not a sports school. I dislike the fact that we even have DI sports.

There is a reason why Geneseo is at the top of every Best Value, Best Public, Best Undergraduate Teaching college publication…students graduate on time, more students go on to graduate school (over 40%), more students study abroad during their college years than any other SUNY campus (38%), service learning experiences are a part of the Geneseo experience for most students, you are not just a number at Geneseo the faculty are committed to each student’s success…

I can tell you that this is what Geneseo promises and they truly deliver!!! People talk about the small town but it is wonderful! You can walk right up to town from the Campus. Since there aren’t so many distractions that you would find on a campus in a big city I have found that students are really involved in this campus.

@fatherli thats good to hear…heading up to Geneseo on Wednesday and Thursday!!

We will be there Thursday as well. See you then GCMom415 (although I won’t know who you are) :).

Ill be the blonde asking alot of questions…LOL…I hope its a nice day!
