Price is not an issue.
Just - which is the better program
My daughter definitively IS going to grad school.
4.0 average. some AP classes
Choices:
University of Cincinnati
Purdue
It’s so hard to find ANY comments in the threads here or ANYwhere.
For some reason she is really interested in viruses and bacteria.
She has in mind developing medicines such as anti-biotics (She wants to use her science to help people).
But its all prospective - she could end up a pharmacist (is going to be a tech this summer at Mom’s request), or who knows what, she has little real world experience.
She is a great problem solver, always notices if something is amiss, is always one step ahead figuring out cases, etc on NCIS, Psych, etc.
FWIW - accepted but she is turning down: Illinois (UIUC)- Her first choice, but they only gave her $3k. I see that it’s hightlyl rated, but can we justify it…
My son also got admission. We live in San Francisco. Still deciding between Urbana Champaign, Univ of Cincinnati, University of Memphis. Have you decided? Did u visit the camps?
UIUC is unreal, just look them up. Now, chemistry is said to be mor eor less standardized everywhere in terms of what is taught / what needs to be learned, so the differences come in how much research is pushed, quality of teaching labs, campus life, that sort of thing. That said, UIUC is top 20 in Chemistry, and the NSF site seemed to say 10x the research dollars. How that affects undergrads is not clear to me - they will do research anywhere,so I dn’t konw if UIIC’s $$ make it slam dunk or not, but ithe whole place certainly is known!!! It was definitely my daughter’s top choice, but it’s expensive out of state. And graduate school is VERY expensive, so a lot of people with an eye towards grad school get into a good program but not the most expensive, to save money for the future. I"m not sure about chemistry, but I heard a few tales of people making like $25k coming out of undergrad for bio, so it’s something to look into and if the same’s for chem (will admit that I don’t know at this stage), at least consider that grad school may be desired and so…save money for it.
