Biology/Chemistry in NYU

How strong is the Biology or Chemistry program at NYU? Do students usually get the opportunity to do research?

the bio and chem departments at CAS are both quite outstanding. They are very well funded. The thing with research at NYU is this: though it is a research institution, it is pften unable to offer its students as much opportunity as its peer colleges do, because NYU is too ****ing big. gen chem has 1 one professor, and 400+ kids, who all want research… so you can do the math…

^ there are tons of scientists at nyu who need research assistants, it’s not like you have to do research with your own professor, or in your own dept.

The Bio and Chem depts are very strong. Students generally don’t do research till Junior or Senior year, and you can apply for research in the physics, chem, biochem, bio and neuro departments (even if you’re not that major) to be an undergrad research assistant. It’s harder to get research opportunities in more populated majors like Bio or Chem (although those departments have larger staffs). It’s a bit easier if you’re a Physics, Biochem or Neuro majors because our dept’s are smaller and more personalized.

i agree with Alix. my roommate last year was pre-med, and she applied for a research position for senior year in the biochem department and was accepted.

there’s also the possibility of doing research outside the University.
