BioMedical Engineering at Purdue

Not much information we can find regarding Purdue’s BioMedical Eng. Dept.

Would be great if i can have answers to the following

Where does it stand in rankings?
Does it offer research opportunities from sophomore year onwards? Paid?
Does it have any tie-up with medical facilities so students can work with Doctors on research?
What’s the placement rate after graduation into industry?
How many choose to go to Medicine and what’s the success rate like?

Here’s Purdue’s link to their rankings: https://engineering.purdue.edu/Engr/AboutUs/FactsFigures/Rankings
BME is ranked 28th. It’s a fairly new major but they just built a brand new center.

My DD (chem E) has a lot of BME friends and she’s heard there are more research opportunities than students.

Here’s the link to co-ops and internship opportunities for BMEs: https://engineering.purdue.edu/BME/AboutUs/Newsletter/2014/01/bme-coops-and-interns-no-longer-new-kids-on-the-block

Related, there are a number of biotech companies in W. Lafayette that partner with the university.

Generally, on campus research is for credit but internship/co-cops are paid.

We found Purdue to be super open to fielding questions, so if you can’t find the specifics, call or email them! https://engineering.purdue.edu/BME/AboutUs/Contact

10% of BMEs go on to med school. Here’s the link for that: https://engineering.purdue.edu/BME/Academics/Undergraduate/ProgramRequirements/PreMedInfo

FWIW, I think BME would be a tough road for a pre-med at Purdue. They share a common FYE program with all the other engineers and there is zero grade inflation, probably a bit of grade deflation. That said my, DD is LOVING Purdue.

Please let know if you have any general questions!

@momofsenior1 What is your daughter’s opinion about honors vs non honors for engineering?

Here are some former threads on the subject.

A different option than honors are the learning communities. Some have a mandatory live in requirement. For others it is optional. My son was in EPICS this year (non live in) and loved it.

My daughter has had an amazing experience in honors college. Excellent advising, priority scheduling, leaderships opportunities, relationships with profs, honors study abroad trips, internships for honors students, honors housing, and the honors engineering design course which incorporates physics. She’s loved every minute and the extra class was thoroughly enjoyable.

She went into honors college hearing mixed reviews and figured she’d stay in it first year to get the priority scheduling/honors advising, but now she’s 100% committed to graduating with her honors diploma.

Feel free to PM me if you want more specifics.
